View Full Version : vintage jensen question
I notice on e-bay and some music stores also that some of the vintage Jensen speakers that are being listed for sale are "organ pulls" and I'm wondering if there is a sonic difference between these and the ones made for guitar amps, sometimes the cone looks different compared to amp speakers, anyone know?

Back in those days a speaker could take on various roles from guitar speaker to organ speaker to a speaker in a phonograph and be the same speaker. I would suspect a Jenson out of a organ would sound just fine in a guitar amp as long as you did not excede the power rateing of the speaker.

Sometimes the organ Jensen speakers had ribbed cones, sometimes smooth cones. There is a bit of a sonic difference there. Most of the time they sound decent. One of the telltale signs is a black frame. Most Jensen speakers used in organs had black frames.

I'm using a P15N ribbed cone (1964 vintage) pulled from an organ and love it. Very smooth, good all around frequency response with great low volume low end. Some of those old organs weren't used very much so they're in great shape but you can get them re-coned.
The biggest thing to watch out for is power ratings and impedance matching your amp. The N series had the highest ratings, AFAIK, good for a 50w amp or less used singly. The ribbed cone breaks up later as you turn up the volume and the smooth cone breaks up sooner. Mine's a blue frame, kind of a light gun-metal blue.

Some organ speakers also had a whizzer cone. I've seen that. Don't know how that would sound in a guitar amp.

The ones from organs were sonically the same as guitar speakers. Look at the cone being used (smooth, ribbed, how many ribs) and the type of dust cap. Jensens had a 301....code on their cones. Some cones were designed for different applications and the thickness of the paper being used, cone number and dust cap size all tell us something about the speaker itself.

I have a 1959 Jensen P12N in a Hammond and have been informed that it is the same speaker used in Fenders that year. I have compared it with many photographs and they certainly look identical....I still haven't unsoldered it yet. The sole reason I bought the M3 really was to get the speaker but the tone wheel is in perfect shape.....
Peace,
Johnny
