Hey...does anyone know if someone makes a single coil in a humbucker shape? I know EMG has one...the H...and I've just learned about the P Rails, but does anyone know of any others?
Thanks!

There are a ton of humbucker sized P90 style single coils. Seymour Duncan Phat Cats, GFS Dream 90, etc. Dimazio makes a pickup called The Humbucker From Hell that supposedly sounds like a single coil.

I've never played a P-90...does it sound Strat-like?

Lindy Fralin's P-92 is supposed to be just about the nearest thing to a true single coil pickup that looks like a humbucker there is.
A P-90 doesn't usually sound Strat-like.

I have a set of the SD Phat Cat humbucker-sized P90's in a jazzmaster body guitar (warmoth).
The bridge pickup sounds good, real growly, but the neck version isnt that interesting. Kinda dark and muddy.
Neither would represent substitutes for a good strat-style single coil sound, if thats what you're looking for.

Seymour Duncan P-Rails
Until now, if you wanted humbucker, P-90, and vintage Strat tones, you'd have to haul three guitars to the gig. Enter P-Rails. It's a full-size humbucker that splits to either a full-size P-90 or a special Alnico-powered single-coil Rail pickup. The humbucker sound is full and expansive, owing to the mis-matched coil configuration. The P-90 is a super fat. And the Rail coils, when used together, sound like the "2" and "4" positions in a great Strat. P-Rails are best used in a matched neck and bridge set. To get both humbucker and P-90 tones, use a two-way switch (push-pull or mini-toggle). To have humbucker and P-90 tones and bring in the added dimension of the single-coil Rail, use a three-way switch (DPDT on-off-on).

Yeah....I think the P-Rail looks very exciting, though I've read some reviews that say the bridge pickup is quieter than the neck....

EMG also has an alnico model called the HA. I have the H and the HA in a guitar of mine and they are good, clear, noiseless single coil pickups.

The P-92 is THE pickup for me. Fits a HB opening and is very single coils sounding....moreso than a P-90.
Look on Jim Soloway's website for clips of P-92s.

I've read about the HA....so it's basically an SA in a humbucker shape? Do you have it wired for 9 or 18 volts?

I've got them wired for 9. They are pretty low output. Very clear and crisp sounding.
The H is the equivalent of the S and the HA is the equivalent of the SA. I have not used either of those types but I like the H and HA far more than the 81/85 set that was originally in my guitar.

Looks interesting to say the least - could you post a link? Can't find it on the SD website.
One nit-pick with their copy though - if it's humbucker sized, it can't possibly be split into a "full size P-90". Gotta love marketing!!

The video clip I've seen (I'm sure it's been posted here, but it is http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fZhJXcSVnfs) makes them sound pretty great....!

Why not? As far I have read it starts as a P90...

Axe - Thanks for the link.
Buchla - By definition, anything that is humbucker sized can't be the same size as a "full size" P-90 because P-90s are bigger than humbuckers. I'm sure you've noticed this.

I've got Lindy Twangmaster's in my Warmoth Tele. They are quite nice and get close to a traditional Tele tone to my ear.

Ok. I presume they are wider because the magnet is longer? Is this what you mean?
If so, agreed, but it still seems to be a P90 in design.
Then again, I am not a designer of pickups but I know that P90's are absolutely fabulous :RoCkIn
