Hey all-

I'm looking to put new humbuckers in my early 70's SG, and was leaning in the direction of the Fralin PAF's for a while until I heard some clips and got some info on the WCR Crossroads and/or the CR/DB combination. Anybody tried both and have the ability to compare? If WCR is the answer, should I go with both CR or the CR/DB combo? Why? Any other suggestions? I tend to play more on the clean side and use moderate gain here and there, I'm not playing much metal through this guitar. Thanks for your time.

No takers? Someone here has to have tried the Fralins and the Crossroads...

a good friend put Wolfetone Dr Vs in a SG '61 reissue and he swears it is KILLER

I have Dr Vs in an old Goldtop and it's pretty unbelievable

That's amazing! I was about to post a thread asking for pickup recommendations for an SG & here it is. Where did you hear the Crossroads clips? I've never heard them & would like to check em out

No clean clips, though... there's also some clips of the various pickups on his myspace, as well as a few youtube vids...

For what its worth i put in the suhr paf's (ssv's) in my sg and am very happy with them. Sound is just what i wanted, i can dial in those cream era (clapton) type tones very easily with my marshall 2555.

hope that helps!

I haven't tried anything else but I like the classic 57s in my SG.

I love my Pearly Gates neck and '59 bridge Seymour Duncans.

I put Antiquities in my '86 SG and am very happy, especially the neck.

My Input? DEFINITELY go with the WCRs.

I have tried Fralin Humbuckers in two guitar: an LP Standard (both positions) and my current SG Standard (bridge). They are very good humbuckers, but I have a real hard time with the "cluttered", stuffy midrange of many humbuckers. The Fralins were pretty good in this regard....fairly open, but still not 100% of what I was looking for. (BTW, I own and love many of Fralin's single coils. So I'm not slagging their PUs by any means...awesome stuff)

I contacted Jim @ WCR and ended up ordering a set of Crossroads for my SG. I had them wind the bridge just a touch hotter than the standard Crossroads ... in between a CR and a Dark Burst bridge. The neck is standard wind. Man, I really love these pickups. They have the warmth that I wanted from a PAF with a nice clear and open midrange. Just a very well balanced pickup that will do great cleans (heck...I can even get the bridge to TWANG if set right with my AC30, and this is in a very mellow sounding, somewhat dark mahogany bodoed SG.) and then can respond dynamically to various levels of gain from pedals, amps, etc. They are NOT a hot output pickup...their output is comparable to a stock wound / classic P-90 IMO. Nice.

I've had them for almost 4 years now, and I have no intention of searching for something else. They are the biz.

After a bit more research it appears I'm going with the CR/DB set... Last chance for anyone to offer up their yay or nay. I've yet to find any negative talk about these pickups...

Thanks for your take e-flat!

For that kinda price I would suggest checking out the Duncan Custom Shop (with roughly 4 weeks lead time), particularly the Duncan Brobucker (a 10K PAF with #42 wire and degaussed a5 magnet) for the bridge. That pickup has smoked all the hot PAF clones that I have compared against (including Fillmores). The neck could be a custom shop pearly gates wound to 7.70K and all.
