How different does a mahogany strat sound?

The body and neck are mahogany with a BRW board. The bass and mids are a bit more pronounced, very warm sounding. The bridge is not as biting as a typical strat, not wimpy tho.
It pretty much accomplishes what I wanted, a warmer sounding Strat.

I wanted something totally whacky, so Warmoth was the only option!

Jmaster body (in ash - very heavy), wizard profile neck, cutaway neck pocket option, ebony fretboard with clay dots, intentional reverse headstock w/reverse logo. Pickups are (now) Gibson burstbucker pro and two dimarzio virtual vintage single coils. Single volume and tone with the last pot (where the jack would normally go) is a blend pot. Switching is a 3-way with my favorite combinations realized by using a 5 way originally. I wasnt using them all so I had it rewired down to 3 for easier 'navigation'. The switch on the lower horn is wired as a killswitch. And yes, that is a Floyd Rose.

What can I say, I wanted something 'different', and I got it.

A question for Warmoth Experts out there. Do you choose the body/neck/pups/hardware etc, and they build for you? That's what I'd like to try at some point with them, but I didn't find a listing for the build cost, just for the parts cost. Is there a description of build charges on the site, or is that built-in (excuse the pun) in the cost of the parts?

WOW!

kudos for such creative thinking - LOVE it! congrats
is that a Daphne blue?
what is the wizard neck?
one thing that keeps me form spending yet MORE $$ on yet MORE guitars I don't need is a lot of Warms on ebay have the 10-16 comp radius and wide neck - which I don't like on strat type guitars.

for me - I'd love that w a vintage cream/green pickguard/Suhr FL pups/5 way switch/wilky trem

LOVE the reverse headstock!! :AOK
you got good taste man!

What's the consensus here on what the best Warmoth neck type is, in terms of sound?

The "Pro" obviously has the most choices in terms of headstocks and woods, and is the most convenient (with the side adjust truss rod, etc.). But I've heard more than once that these don't really sound all that great.

The vintage modern's truss rod can at least be adjusted up at the headstock, while the vintage must be taken off to adjust (not a fan of that).

Thoughts?

Thanks!

Its sonic blue -

http://www.warmoth.com/paint/paint.cfm?fuseaction=solid_sonicblue

The Wizard profile is like the Ibanez necks with the same name. its just a little thinner than the standard thin profile.

http://www.warmoth.com/guitar/images/necks/contours/wizard.jpg
Wizard 1st Fret - .735" 12th Fret - .810"

I didnt go with the compound radius. Not my thing. This fretboard is very 'flat', which I prefer.

My thinking with this guitar is that it would break the cycle of buying and reselling guitars. No one would ever want to pay me what it cost to build this thing, so I figured I'll end up keeping it forever.

My tastes have actually kind of changed though, and the neck ended up being a little wider than I wanted. I'd probably make some changes down the road, but as it is, its a very capable guitar for recording or gigging.

Thanks for your vote. I was worried it might get poo-poohed here.

To my knowledge, Warmoth does not assemble guitars. They send you the parts to assemble yourself, or to have the luthier of your choice put the guitar together. I've purchased several replacement necks from them, and the quality is great. I would love to try my hand at assembling a whole guitar from them!

what is the wizard neck?

Wizard refers to the Wizard neck profile by Ibanez. Wide and super thin. Shredder neck

pir8matt

Yep - I wanted vintage looks but shredder capabilities.

Im not sure why, honestly. If I had it to do over again now, I'd probably do a standard Jazzmaster trem system, and a standard neck profile.

I've always liked the look of reverse headstocks, but the reality is they're kind of a pain in the ass when you have to change strings.

Thanks for the comments guys. It really turned out better than I imagined and it plays better than any other "Strat" except my Suhr. It's weird but I've also been wondering lately about selling it. It's strange that you put time and effort (and money!) into these things and then after a while it becomes just another guitar. I've got a beat up Telecaster that doesn't play anywhere near as good as this and yet I would never part with it and yet this, despite it being a partscaster, is really a beautiful looking, sounding and playing guitar that just becomes ordinary after a while. Why is that?

I've built 4 project guitars over the past 15 years.
Interesting jack placement. I was gonna do that for my build... but I decided to just keep it traditional.

Here's my build. Only the neck is warmoth. The body was made by yours truly in the machine shop at school. The body is POPLAR (even though it sort of looks like Ash)... I found a really good looking piece at a lumber yard.

I use Warmoth, since 1988, and used to use USACG..
I like the Warmoth Vintage modern Boat necks, with 10-16 radius, and 6100 frets.
Their bodies are also great.
Mahogany/Rosewood necks are my faves.

Wow, I'm seeing so many Tele-Pauls with humbuckers and/or P90's or some type of cool config here which I can't find anywhere else. Maybe it's time for me to make another partscaster. I guess my only concern is that I can't do finishing AT ALL... so, I would most definitely just be using Tung Oil (which can be really nice) on the body. Maybe I should just do it -- I don't have much cash on hand so I could buy piece meal over time as well.
Are you guys finishing the body's on these yourselves? If so, hell of a job for sure.

hey Gasp, if you can't do anything but Tung Oil, but want to get some gloss, try the Minwax Wipe On Poly. Wipes on like water, and dries nice and hard and glossy. Works best on woods with woods with tight grain, or if it's sealed (:treated?). Do like 15 thin coats, and you'll have a nice glossy shine.

The dark, Red wood Strat I posted is Padouk. It contains natural oils, and doesn't have to be hard-finished.

Padouk is fast becoming a favorite wood for me. I have 2 necks that are made from it, one that's 6-7 years old, and it's a really nice feeling wood. Both the body and neck are Padouk on the Strat, and it's climbing my favorite list quickly.
