the diff is finish
the un-VOS, is a polished version of the VOS
so more labor in polishing, hence more money

you can order a R9 without the vos and it will come with the gloss finish and its about 300 to 400 more, i think it was 2005 that they started the vos and before that they all had gloss. for a couple years gibson had something very similar to a vos called custom authentic and if i remember correct it was a 250 upcharge back then.

I remember that, I had a "CA" (Custom Authentic)
loved it. Love the VOS also
but that is true, they used to charge more for the dull
finish
now they charge more to polish it

There is only that huge of a proice difference when you are comparing R7s and 8s to flametop R9s.

I like the Custom Authentic finishes. I think the VOS looks like fake aging.

I believe that's because the custom authentic finish is actually polished first, then treated to look aged, whereas VOS is never polished. I think custom authentic is their best finish, and I've owned both. Too bad they discontinued it. The VOS is ok, but not nearly as comfortable as the CA, and the metal aging on the VOS is about the cheapest-looking ageing you can imagine.
+1 I would have to agree. I think the CA began in '01 and always had Grovers. I have a '00 '61 SG/Les Paul Standard that was done just before Custom Authentic (no Grovers) and it is incredible. (I'm not sure they ever did an SG in CA.) You'd swear that axe was 47 years old and just sat in a closet somehwere. The VOS is not nearly as detailed and just doesn't compare. The VOS to me feels "sticky" and un-authentic (is that a word?). Anyway, I hate the VOS feeling and lots of oher guys agree. Gibson should abandon it.

I have a 2007 VOS R7 and a 2005 non VOS. I could care less about the finish as I hope to be aging each naturally in the 40-50 years I hopefully have left.

I'm not sure if this whole "VOS" campaign is doing anything great for the customer except confuse them.
I don't how many threads on online I'm seeing with people just totally confused about Gibson 's lines.
Personally I when through the extent to understand and research the line for my sake of being a LP RI lover, but I can see how many others would just get lost.
With names, lines, and models like...
CA (Custom Authentic)
Murhpy
VOS
Historic
RI
Custom Shop
Inspired By
ect......its no wonder the public is clueless.

I'm not sure what VOS does for the finish of my LP Special other than dull it up, but the plek thing they do to the frets is really nice.
