View Full Version : Scandalous Mid-Eastern Mutt

Our producer is releasing a collaboration CD (which I just got a copy of today) ...
Two volumes of stuff he's produced in the past ... Here's a mood jam three of us he hired
put together in the studio for a totally different project a few years back ...

The same fellow playing flute & chanting, is also a guest on our band's Yaqui Flower tune...
All the parts except flute and percussion are done by your ol' friend Joseph with his guitar synth:

SoundClick artist: lucidology -Mid-Eastern Mutt (http://www.soundclick.com/bands/page_songInfo.cfm?bandID=691051&songID=6509065)

This is a bit different to say the least ...
Would luv to hear what kind of affect it might have on you (if any)... ?

First time I've listened to it in quite awhile... thought it was sort of cool ...

Damn, that is so nice, Joseph!

Reminds me a little of when Holger Czukay was getting into his Middle East period.
Beautiful recording too.........

I love it, basically.

Best, Pete.

Mutt will hunt! You are such a natural player in every style you try - you always play to the song and you make it sound so confident and easy wherever you end up. Great stuff, and thanks for putting it up, Joseph.

I wasn't aware of these guys ...
They sound wonderful ...

Thanks Andy ...

There's some just plain ol' nylon string I'm playing..
while I'm holding a pedal tone sample of Monks Chanting just on my low E string ...

Then there's a bit of an Oud type of sound added as an after thought ...

It's technique I often use playing for bellydancers
that's really fun to play around it ...

We certainly need to make that happen. And I might find myself with more spare time than I'm used to pretty soon, makes a drive south a possibility.

We'll put a selection of Chapins into your hands too! :)

Joseph,

I started to listen yesterday but the damn phone wouldn't quit. Work!!!

I love the spiritual vibe you get with these guys. It strikes me as genuine, on top of being very musical.

Thanks much...

& thanks much to you Greg ...

Truly some genuine vibes happen under the auspices
of this particular producer ...
He doesn't tolerate anything less then authenticity ...

Maybe not so much in the music ...as he loves fusion of styles and such..
but certainly in those of us he hires ..

Hey Paul ...
Thanks brudder...

It's really fun to play in this particular style ...
I've done lots of playing with this particular dumbeck player, Brock, for belly dancers...

He knows all their beats inside out. A total wiz when it comes to these beats..
& the way he plays finger rolls on the drum is just astounding ...

Also have a mizmar (snake charmer) synth tone that works great ...

Hi, Joseph

That was totally different - but cool! A very nice vibe going on there. Thought the guitar sat in the track very well without a hint of self-consciousness. Taste is definitely the name of your game, I tell ya! A neat trick, dude.

Hey great thanks Dale ...

I'm just using a Nylon string Godin acoustic/electric to get the tones..
There's three sounds on this recording ...
Two synth tones...
One sort of like monks chanting, which is programed for only my low E String ... which I use as a pedal tone
and the sounds a little like an Oud which I overdubbed ...

But the third sound, and the one you hear the most is just regular guitar..

However, I am using my fingers and sort of pulling the strings upward and letting them slap back a little to get somewhat of a sitar-ish vibe ...

Yo ... you would have no problem at all with these kind of exotic scales
if someone threw one at ya ...
The trick is in the nuance if a little authenticity is asked for ...

Other then that .... You can hear a lot of guys use these (as I'm sure you know) ...

McLaughlin always says that a fun way to go outside is to inject exotic scale lines into one's solos ...

Hey thanks ... nice to hear from you ..

Actually this particular cut is coming out on a compilation CD
called "Dark Chocolate" when should be on the stands in early June ..

Think I'm on at least about three fourths of that CD ....
It's a bunch of stuff thrown together by the producer which
he's done over the years...

Kim Stone and I are the only guys from our current fusion group
is who are on various tunes ...
