Interesting idea, everyone will have a different list of guitarists, but hey, that makes for good discussion! Mine would be as follows

1. Eric Clapton
2. Jimi Hendrix
3. Jimmy Page
4. Robert Johnson

Not necessarily. Choose the ones important to you :). Electric, acoustic rock, blues, classic...it doesn't matter.

I had the hardest time with the last pick. Obviously I narrowed it to a rock list. I went with those who I felt had changed the game single handedly and inspired endless followers. Would have loved to put Beck on there as he's sometimes my favorite, but I don't feel like his influence is widespread enough.

Funny, though ... I'm a rock guy through and through. I've noticed a majority of Mt. Rushmore of Rock recommendations have been for Eddie Van Halen, and I'm not necessarily disagreeing.

It just got me thinking:

Van Halen has had ZERO influence on me. In fact, I've never owned a single Van Halen album in all my life. I only know the songs that were on the radio in the car, and most of the time I change the station because I've heard them too many times.

Sometimes I wonder if I'm the only rocker who doesn't really care about Van Halen.

Is that weird?

P.S. I am in no way implying that Eddie's contributions should be minimized. There is no denying the mark he has made on guitar history. I've really brought up a seperate issue, and am thinking out loud more than anything.

That'd be a good Mt. Rushmore of "Guitarists Who Have Managed To Stay Relevent." I'm suprised Jer hasn't shown up more on here, honestly. Pretty much made the jam band genre. But, I have seen that 20 minute jazz-rock odyssey's aren't exactly the popular thing around here.

I understand what you're saying, however if you're a rock guy I can't help but feel that many of the players that HAVE influenced you will have been influenced by EVH.

In my opinion, there are three "eras" when it comes to rock guitar playing, pre Jimi, post Jimi and post EVH. Both Jimi and Eddie re-wrote the book on how electric (rock) guitar is played and the influence of both is undeniably pervasive.

I love them both!

Simon

Other than he blew in like a hurricane and revived the guitar rock scene with a sound and tone that's never been heard before while influencing thousands of guys to pick up and learn the guitar...... yeah, I guess Eddie and the band didn't really do anything. http://img3.harmony-central.com/acapella/ubb/smile.gif

I started playing guitar not long before the first VH album came out and I think I may have been the only kid in my jr. high that didn't buy the record. I just never had any desire to plaly like him. I'll never know if I could have because I never tried. I have seen VH live a number of times but his playing never touched me like it did most people of my generation.

Ronnie Wood
Mick Taylor
Joe Perry
Peter Frampton

I would have to say that those four were the biggest influences on how I play, and being a Detroiter, Ted Nugent gets an honorable mention. The Detroit radio stations played him at least once an hour when I was a kid, at least it seemed that way.

Perhaps my original post is worthy of a re-read. I said that I was IN NO WAY minimizing EVH's contributions or the mark he has left on guitar history. All I was saying was that I was probably one of the weird rock guys who isn't into him. I never said or implied that he didn't do anything important.

And what exactly are you implying about most people being unable to play at that level? What does that have to do with anything I said?

Honorable mentions to Les Paul, Eddie Lang, Jeff Beck. Chuck Berry and Clapton were incredibly influential, also, but I consider the above to be more important. A couple issues with some of the posts, you have to pick an American guy so Beck, Clapton, Page etc are all out. It would be like putting Winston Churchill up there, "Hey it's the USA!"

With this in mind I'd choose:

Chet Atkins - basically invented the Nashville sound
Wes Montgomery - still the jazz guitar king
BB King - Lots of great blues guys but he still is probably the best overall package.
Andres Segovia (if American?) -

otherwise

Jimi Hendrix - the downside is it took hanging out in England before he got famous.

Lonnie Johnson
Chuck Berry
Paul Burlinson
Jimi Hendrix

What I would rather see, however, would be:

Leo Fender
Ted McCarty
C. F. Martin III
Paul Bigsby

Yngwie. And maybe John Mayer.

:bananaYou'd need Alexander Dumble too, just for the holy trinity of TGP no-no's.

I'd have Robert Johnson & Jimi Hendrix and leave it at that. Although Eric Clapton probably deserves a place along with EVH for their respective influence on all that came after them.

How about a Blues Rushmore?
Mine would be Robert Johnson, Albert Collins, John Lee Hooker, Freddie King, although I'd still like to shoehorn Jimi Hendrix onto that one too.
