If I have a 2x12 cab in black tolex and want to change the cosmetics to purple tolex, how hard or difficult is it for a noob to remove and recover it with tolex and have it look good?
Something a noob with no experience could do?
Leave it to the pros?
Don't do it at all?

I forget who but someone put a step by step thread on how. It was very detailed. Good stuff.

Jim, I think it's like doing a lymphangiogram.

Jim, I think it's like doing a lymphangiogram.
But nobody does those anymore! Thank god.
I did search but didn't find anything.

Check this out, Jim - it might help:

From another guy's page:
I don't have any pics of the tolex process because it was too time-consuming to want to remember in graphic detail!!

It's not an easy thing to do on the first try, but it can be done. You need space, a few tools, and a lot of patience.

Takes some patience, but not too bad. Cutting the corners is the toughest for me. You might get a few scraps and try your hand at covering around the corners. I inspected a few cabs to see how they're done before I started. Corner protectors definitely give you a fudge factor! I used contact cement and I wonder if that would save the sanding step on the link provided since it will dissolve any prior cement on the cab. Give plenty of time to allow the cement to dry (like the instructions say). If you don't, you'll get bubbles, sliding and stretching of the tolex. Be prepared for some tolex shrinkage where your pieces butt against each other - just be careful not to stretch out the tolex as you're applying it. I've covered four cabs now and I think I've finally worked out the bugs! Best of luck.

I am finishing a cab right now and have also rehoused a combo. I built all new cabs, so I am not familiar with stripping off old tolex. But I read somewhere that it required a specific technique. Anyway, I searched and found this in about 5 min. Got to go back 6 months and try different phrases. This was searched under the phrase "removing tolex"

Its easy and Jim from Southbay has told us how to do it a few times here I believe. Ive redone my Marshall 900 combo in Blue and just redid a really old Marshall 4 x 12. worked out pretty good.
Do a search.
