My friend has a MIJ strat that's he's been letting me borrow for the past few weeks. I love it. I hate that I love it. But I love it. When he asks for it back I will be sad because I will have to wait to buy my own.

IMO and experience, it's all in finding the right one as Strats, even with the exact same specs, can sound and play VERY different. I'm a 40+ year Strat-o-holic of the highest order but I don't care for 95% of the one's I try out...but, in that last 5%, I find lots of goosebumps to be had ;).

I will agree with that. I have bought and sold a few but the only one that I really liked was a MIM that I dropped Dimarzio VV's in and had refretted. I haven't played one that I liked since.

The thing I love about Strats is that all those pedals that sound like garbage with humbuckers really come alive when fed single coils.

There are definitely special ones, but I also think that Strats really need a personalized setup to work right for an individual player. I find that spending time tweaking can make most Strats pretty damn good axes in general. Sound is of course an important factor too and each individual instrument will vary. But a proper setup is so important.
