I have a Bogner Shiva sized cab.
It will be used with both a Metropolis (30W EL84) and a Duende (18W 6V6) head.

It is closed-back, ported and currently loaded with a 16Ohm Celestion Custom 80.

I'm not big on the speaker to begin with (had one in my Shiva) and at 80W, I don't think it is a good "match" for either amp.

What's your opinion on a speaker that would work well with both heads, and in this type of cab?

Im in an extremely similar situation, as i am piecing together a ac30-esque build and a 6v6-based build...and I'm going to run them into a large bodied 2x12 cabinet.

Being an amp builder, you'd think I would be fairly certain what speakers to load, but speakers are the one area I have serious trouble with and I've been burned by alot of bad speakers (i.e. not to my liking)...

Depending on the type of music you play, your speaker choice could vary a bit. I am considering the following pairs:

2x greenbacks
cele blue/g12H30
emi wizard/red fang

I'm also fighting/arguing with the impulse to try the warehouse offerings of the above mentioned speakers. While I've been vocal on the price increases of WGS, the prices as they currently stand dont scare me. I just dont trust the prices not to go up in the future. What I *am* concerned with WGS, is how they hold up over time. While there can be a million posts here about how great they are and how well they're built, there isn't a single person that can attest to their sound not degrading over a 10 year period...and that has me seriously concerned, as I am looking to load speakers and not touch them for a very long while.

Given that train of tought (and I know I'm a f#$%ing rambler, I'm sorry for that), I am leaning towards the cele's and I will most likely get the blue/g12H30 pair.

hope that helps....

ps. what kind of music do you intend to play with these speakers, that'll help a great deal...

Well the Metro is chimey and great for straight rock tones, the Duende has that 6V6 creaminess going on.
Alt. Country, rock, blues. Anything but high gain.

Thats exactly what I hope to attain from these two amps. an 4xel84 chime for the ac30/country/blues thing...and a 2x6v6 for the syrupy rock/blues/alt-country tones.

You would probably need something rated for 50W or higher, assuming you may push your amps into distortion. Something that does cleans and distorted tones equally well.

In all I think the Thames would suit your needs well, being linear and detailed enough to do pretty cleans, whilst being "british" enough to have a character of its own and handle distortion well.

Scumback? I have an H75 8ohm 30 watt speaker that sounds really nice with both my Marshall-esque 4 EL84 amp AND my Fender BF clean sparkle, tweed grind amp. They have a number of different offerings including ceramic's and alnico's. I believe one of the guys is a TGP'er too, really cool.

Heh heh...yeah, I'm a member of the TGP. ;)

Try www.scumbackspeakers.com It's got a bit more info than the other link does now.

Jim,
Saw you list of questions. GREAT idea.
I'll get that over to you, just haven't had time yet.

The Duende sounds serene through a G12H30. So that's what I'd try first, I'd probably get a Hellatone 30 from Avatar, as it's a G12H30 that's been somewhat broken in already.

If that one sounds good, I'd probably experiment with some similar Scumworks speakers. If it's lacking chime, I'd probably get a Red Fang and move on from there.
