Anybody do this with any success? I've got a Roland R09 which works just fine, but I'm wondering if an ipod with a decent mic/pre could be just as good, and there'd be one less thing to bring, since I always have my ipod with me.
With all the third party stuff made for iPod, I wonder if there aren't some good sounding/easy/handy solutions for this. Anyone know of any/try them?

I know that there are cheap mics that can be attached, but I've never seen anything that would even qualify as low level prosumer.
I'd be psyched if someone did, though!

The Belkin mics around $60, are stereo and work very well for what they are. Garageband has preset to adjust for them when you create a new podcast.
For a simple, stereo capturing of a live event they do very well. HiFi? I don't know today. Maybe HiFi 20 years ago!
There are units that offer a mixer to Ipod recording as a WAV.
