You know, really cheap with built in software instruments AND the ability to record live tracks also?

I don't know the answer to your Q, but if you like Garage Band why not get a relatively inexpensive used Mac? My local Craig's List is full of them for $800 or less.

You could try Sound Forge Audio Studio or look at Fruity Loops.

I have a mac and have not used either but I've heard them both pop up.

It's for my girlfriend who is a singer/songwriter and doesn't have a Mac. She got jealous of my Macbook Pro and wanted a similar program for Windoze.

After thirty minutes of discussion, she gave in and ordered a new Macbook Pro. Problem solved, and it only cost $1600. :) Typical TGP sitution :) :(

For a cheap, fully functional program check out Reaper. Free to use, and only $60 if you want to register it.

Another happy ending :D

I use GB on a Mac mini and appreciate its simplicity, yet versatility. When I'm trying to be recording engineer and player at the same time, the simplicity is very nice. Some of the features added to the latest version of GB are nice too, i.e. looping.

Who knows, she may start to like the Mac for a lot of other reasons once she makes the transition? :)
