Has anyone played both of these? Looking for a killer gigging head, and it seems like one of these would give me the tones I'm looking for (Hard Rock and Metal tones with a killer clean) Thanks in advance.

Can't lose with either, but you'll come in $800 or so lower on the Egnater. Dude, go over to GC and play both amps. Last couple times I was over there they had both. I like the EVH cab better, but I like the greenback thing. I don't think either would satisfy your XTC desire, though.

gotta get over there. I'm thinking new Egnater, or used Fender to keep them equal. Your right on the XTC thing. :BEER Someday I'll own another. Can't lose with either, but you'll come in $800 or so lower on the Egnater. Dude, go over to GC and play both amps. Ive owned many 101bs and just got rid of a classic. I know its not popular to say so but...I like my EVH better.:hide It just sounds more alive to me and the clean is much better. I also just got rid of an SLO that I think is better than the Bogners. To me the EVH gives me the things I liked about both amps in one amp. 14 to 15 hundred used if you look around.
Have not had a chance to play the Tourmaster. Probably wont either. If I decide to get an Egnater it will be a Mod 50. Ive played that and really liked it.

They feel similar. The EVH is more open sounding IMHO. Its kind of a 5150 meets an XTC to me. You really should try one first. I remember owning both an 101b and a 5150 at the same time once. I would play through both and think man, if I could just get this 5150 to be a little warmer and get the feel of the XTC I be happy. To me thats the 5153. I also like the loop in the EVH as well. Thats where the XTC always shined too. THe 5150 loop was horrible.

I don't feel the 5150 III's clean channel is on the same level as the Tourmaster's. With the gain channels, it's simply a matter of taste. Both are good.

I have heard the Tourmasters are having alot of problems. I was at my local GC and The head they had was super noisey and the combo they had was quiet but nearly blew up a few minutes after i plugged into it.

Any issue we have had has been exclusive to pre amp tube failure. We have not had one amp sent to our shop that has blown up.

5150 for gain. It kills the Tourmaster for chunky metal type stuff.
Tourmaster wins for ALL other types of tones.
IMHO.

havn't played a 5153, but just had some fun on my tourmaster, the 4th channel is loads of fun and the cleans are killer! can get some really cool "modded marshall" stuff on 3rd channel with the gain up. To me(hobby type) fills the bill of:crystal clean, modded marshall, and modern(mesa-uber) for a modest price. and there is still another channel like driven fender using the power grid. takes some tweaking, but hilly helped me dial it in from rig-talk forum, and for that I'm greatful.

I've played both. I'd take the EVH hands down. I'm sure the Egnater would sound a lot sweeter, while sitting in front of it, if you were plugged into the EVH cab. Even though the EVH cab lists power handling at 100 watts, the speakers are Celestion EVH Signature 20 watters. Of course, Celestions have always been conservatively rated, so I'm sure they can take a beating. I also heard the EVH live with a Les Paul through a pair of Genz Benz G-Flex 2x12 cabs and it sounded killer.

I'm right on the fence.
Tried them both. Actually went in thinking I wanted the EVH, but came out with the eggy. My bass player thinks it sounds better than my JVM. At the moment, the eggie is my backup to an independence, though I played both about 50% last week. It's a very nice sounding amp. My BP calls it "warm". Sits well in the mix. The clean is more to my liking than the EVH or JVM cleans. You really need to spend time with it though. VERY tunable sounds in there, but it can take some time to get used to how the knobs work together.

In case you didnt know. You are required to have a disclosure statement in your sig, if you have any affiliation with egnator.:)
I should not have said blown up, that was inaccurate. I just really want one and I had a terrible experience trying them out. It sounded like a short or something. The amp just starting buzzing uncontrolably. The volume knob had no effect only the standby switch would shut the thing up. I asked the guy at GC if I was doing something wrong. He said like an idiot I dont know man we have alot of problems with those."
So does bruce do all the repair jobs?

Noted and changed. Yes Bruce or myself do the repairs.

Tourmaster wins only because of the cleans. Channel 4 on the Tourmaster with the gain up and the "contour" set at noon will get pretty damn metal.
Have tried both. I prefer the Tourmaster and own one. Better cleans and it's generally a bit more versatile. The cleans aren't bad by any means on the EVH and the amp did sound great on channel two but channel three was too over the top and not sweet enough for my tastes. For hard rock and metal you'd probably like the EVH more because the Tourmaster is IMO more vintage voiced despite having all the gain anyone would need. It doesn't have quite the fast attack favored by metal players.
The Contour setting is almost totally useless on the Tourmaster IMO. Turns a fat grinding midrange into a can of bees. I didn't try to lift the EVH head but the Tourmaster is probably the heaviest head I've ever tried to carry.

I have the 5153 and I agree with the above post that it is a blend of the best of the XTC 101b and SLO. The 2nd channel is the definitive rock/hard rock tone. The lead channel is articulate, clear, and fast. Perfect for legato playing. Does the heavy chugga stuff too and any lead playing really.
The Tourmaster has a more vintage tone in the lead channel with sustain for days.
Tourmaster clean has more headroom where the EVH goes into JTM territory with the gain past 9-10:00. Depends on your taste.
Two amps you can usually find in the same place so ideally you can A/B them.

My fav amp I've owned to date has been the Bogner XTC 101b, in terms of tone and feel, so it seems like these 2 amps need a test drive (if I can find them in a local shop) I'm a Metal head, but seem to go for the vintage side of the high gain tones.
