Here's a couple of quick pics and clips of my new vibe prototype...brilliantly named the "Ocean Vibe"! Nothin' like a clever name to reel 'em in. The knobs are the larger MXR style and will come with the rubber fittings to make foot adjustments easier. Controls at this point are intensity, speed, and a chorus/vibrato mini toggle switch. Also, inside is a volume trimmer that can be set at a few clicks above unity if desired. I haven't figured out a way to cram a 9v battery inside but it runs off external 9v power just fine. Size is roughly the same as a Boss pedal...125-B size.

The following clips were recorded using a Telecaster into a 5E3 Tweed Deluxe head and 2x10 extension cab. Close mic'd with an SM-57 and straight into a DAT recorder. I tried to keep everything as dry as possible. And please try to get past the amateurish playing! And yes, I had to pull out a feeble "BOS" attempt on the dirty setting. By the way, the dirt is coming from a Monte Allums modded Blues Driver placed AFTER the Ocean Vibe in the signal chain. Keep in mind also that this pedal is still in the development stages...input and criticism is very welcome! It's not going to do a spot-on Univibe, given the circuitry and size limitations, but like I said in a previous thread - the idea is to get real close...in a compact pedal. I should also mention that in internal trimmer will let you alter the shape a little...and I'm still experimanting with some different LEDs and photocells. A work in progress no doubt.

Right on Corby, great to see it come to fruition.

Sounds pretty good - I personally think - if it's possible - to get a bit more of an offset with the sweep..

can you expand a little? I want to make sure I get what you're saying by "offset". In my mind, that could mean a few very different things...

thanks

That sounds really good. Any chance of being able to vary the shape of the wave?

there's an internal trimmer that will vary it quite nicely...haven't decided where I personally like it yet. It'll be easily adjustable in future production models, though...if I get it that far!

For comparison's sake, could you give us a dirty sample with the Blues Driver placed before the Ocean Vibe?

I just noticed, you addressed my question about a trim pot while I was typing it. So guess my only real question is; when are you going to start taking orders?

Thanks

Yeah - I could do that. I did record a quick sample that way but I'd need to go edit it down and post. Depending on the OD pedal, vibes can get a little too phasey and "swishy" to my ears when placed after a dirt pedal. I didn't like this pairing in that order but others might! I'll try to put that up soon...

and as for orders - I'm not quite sure yet. I've got some guys helping me beta test and I still need to address some wiring issues inside. Then I'll need to build another one and see how consistent it is. I'd say I'm a couple of months away still. Haven't even thought about pricing yet either although I'd suspect between $150 and $200.

Sounds Freakin' Awesome!
I love it and I am a vibe maniac. I would second the request for a bit more offset in the sweep. Hard to describe, hopefully "drunkeness" fills the definition (to borrow a phrase from TheGrooveKing). Just a little more non-symmetrical aspect to the sweep, sort of like the difference between my '60's vibe -round and symmetrical with a good amount of bass - and my MicroVibe (tweaked by yours truly) - wobbly with not a round sweep, more throb in the low end and sort of pear shaped in the sweep. I hope that helps, otherwise, sign me up!!

P.S. Please do a Flanger next!!!

Yeah - I've got several key components socketed so I can mess with all of that...it's just a matter of finding the sweet spot I think. I recently took some of the low end emphasis out but that took away some of the "heartbeat" I think. Thanks for the input - I'll definitely take it to heart.

Uhmmm... let me see if I can describe it. The sweep of a vibe has an offset between the "highs" and "lows" ... it's not perfectly uniform. To me a phaser has less throb and offset - a univibe has more throb and offset. Does that make sense?

cmacalpine
06-12-2008, 07:53 PM
that's it exactly!!!

Ocean

Makes perfect sense and that's exactly what I'm hoping to achieve with this pedal. I think I'm getting close but finding the right combination of components is the tough part. I've got some ideas, though :)

I appreciate you guys chiming in and I hope this project takes off in the not too distant future. Again, I think the important thing to remember here is that the finished product won't be a true 'Vibe but a reasonable and convincing "little brother" so to speak. Allright, I'm gonna go get some sleep and try not to dream about photocell light and dark resistance!

I'll be very interested in this Vibe when it's done. No battery option is fine with me but I would like to see some sort of externally adjustable speed control on it.

Are you talking about an expression pedal jack? 'Cause it does have an external speed knob mounted on the top right...

It'll be tough to find room in the box to mount an extra exp. jack but I haven't ruled it out yet.

When you say "Controls at this point are intensity, volume, and a chorus/vibrato mini toggle switch" if the knob on the top right is the Speed knob where is the Volume & Intensity knob because I only count two knobs.

Is this lamp/ldr based or opamp based like the easyvibe?

Hi Corby

and thank you for the PM to prompt me to chip in if I have any comments. From the clips, it's sounding good to me (and nice to hear clips played with a Telecaster so I don't have to guess what mine might sound like!).

Like 2EZ above, I could do with a bit of clarification: on top of the box we have intensity and speed and the ch/vib toggle? And inside we have volume and 'shape' trimmers? (Just checking, as I've been skim reading your messages - apologies!). If so, that all sounds good to me - would fit my needs perfectly, and probably shunt the Lovepedal Vibe off my (in assembly) board :-)

So ... can we expect more clips soon, possibly demoing different speeds/intensities? And when might you be happy enough to let some of us try one!! :-)

my mistake - I didn't realize I wrote that until now...I wrote "volume" and it should have said "speed". The volume is controlled inside via trimmer.

Controls on top are intensity, speed, and the mini toggle for chorus/vibrato. volume inside...

yes- you are correct. also see my posts above...sorry for the mess up. Not sure if I'll do a tourbox or not but that probably wouldn't be such a bad idea. thanks for the suggestion! I'll look into that when I get the pedal back from Jack Zucker.

I've been bugging Corby for months about doing a tourbox... Come on, Corby, let 'em go! :D

Ocean
06-16-2008, 03:30 PM
Trust me - I'm workin' on it...can't seem to get caught up but I'm gettin' there. I'm hoping to put together a big multi-pedal tourbox but we'll see. If it looks like that'll take too long - I'll just send out the Pearl...maybe the vibe proto.

Any other comments out there about this vibe so far? I know the clips only tell so much...

I think you should call it "the Wave"
I dunno, just sounds like a cool name for a vibe pedal made by Ocean FX....

Well - my hope was to have it available by the end of the summer but I don't think I'm going to hit the mark. Jack Zucker still has the prototype and as soon as I get it back (I'm expecting it any day now) I can get the ball rolling. At this point, I would guess that we're still a couple of months away due to Pearl Drive orders and the need to catch up on those...

If you haven't already, sign up for my mailing list at www.oceanefx.com (http://www.oceanefx.com) and you'll get word as soon as I can firm up a date...thanks!

I thought it was a bit loose as well...I'd put the overdrive pedal AFTER the vibe to get the thick Trower swirl. An OD before the vibe (which is how he's got it set in the vid) always seems to wash out the vibe IMO. I've noticed this with other vibes as well. Anyhow, just my 2 cents. I've gotten several emails about the Ocean Vibe and I just can't seem to get ahead enough to start building them. I'll keep you guys informed though...
