View Full Version : John Mayer's Rig for the Summer 08 Tour

It looks like he is changing things up a bit. I am curious if the Dumble(s) is(are) safe somewhere in a rack or he is leaving it(them) at home? Either way, I am sure his tonal evolution continues. I am looking forward to hearing it at the Mile High Music Fest.

maybe he wanted to insure them and the price tag was outragous so he went for the next best thing?

On a related note...
I've been hired to direct his set at the Mile High Music Fest, so I'm guessing it's going to show up on tv somewhere.
My money that it will be on FUSE at some point after the festival.

Me too. It will be interesting to hear. I am sure there are many factors driving the streamlining. Everything from personal preferences to the logistics of festival stage rigs. As long as it is equally inspiring to him, I am sure we will get a great show.

What cabs are those? Surprising to see the move away from TR cabs as well as the Sterling Signature. I suppose that is a bit more of an "off the shelf" setup that us mere mortals can get close to buying (if you could find one of his Sig models available!). Awesome post, really appreciate that.

Hoss, do you know what he's got in the rack?
Cool pic. His rig sounded great on the Continuum tour, but I like the look of this streamlined rig. Bet it sounds cool too.

No sweat Travis. Hopefully it isn't too obvious that I am a card carrying member of the JM Man Crush Club?
Redd, I have no idea what is in the rack. When it comes to talking rigs JM would be a great guy to sit down with. Based on an earlier blog post of his, I am guessing he has a couple of Way Huge pedals on board.

That TR signature amp is such an oddity. How did they justify $8K for an Overdrive Supreme Reverb that doesn't have the OD? There's a ton of complexity simply deleted.
The cabs look custom. For an avowed gear whore, he may be trying to advertise less....especially if he's filming the tour. Less distraction from the main event. :stir

How long ago was it when you would get run off the boards for not disliking John Mayer? I think it was less than 2 years ago. I remember a couple of years ago that there was a "bashing JM" thread where I was roasted because I mentioned that;
1) He was smart for doing the pop music he did. the world doesn't need or want another guitar hero.
- not many people believed that he could actually "play" guitar, that he was just another singer song writer/pretty face.
2) I mentioned that his biggest influnce was SRV
- this caused another explosion of hatred for John, because as we all finally now know, Stevie Ray was the original hack/imitator and that made JM just antother Stevie Ray Vaughnabe. :p
3) I predicted that John would cross over into the Blues Rock genre, and would even have a second band and tour as the Blues-Rock guitar player he wants to be.
- almost everyone thought that the idea was ludicris that anyone would be interested. Teenie boppers wouldn't want to hear Blues, and adults who like JM would not like any sort of Blues -and no respectible guitar player will want to hear another SRV clone.
Anyway, while I am a fan of John's ability and tone, I've not gone out of my way to catch one of his JM3 shows. I am glad I don't have to hide in the closet as a JM admirer anymore. :)

I'm in Wisco but I lived in CO. from '83-92. First Aurora and then Boulder where I went to college.
Last time I was there was 6 years ago so I'm excited to come back for a short visit, see some old friends, and hang out a bit before the show.
Will do on the tv show. My rough guess is that it will be on FUSE since they seem to be showing a lot of festival highlights this summer.

John owns many Dumble amps. At last count he had more than anyone in the world at 14 and that BEFORE he was even noted as using them on a regular basis. He was even quote somewhere as saying he would have no reservations about taking one on the road since he could afford them.

I doubt this would bother Mayer in anyway, as he has purchased several during the past 8 or so years. And based on what I've heard of his signature Two Rocks, why bother with Dumble ?
He's a collector, vintage pedals, guitars, Dumbles and Rolex watches. I guess his starlet collection is non-vintage though...hth

I'm not nearly as into blues/rock stuff as some people here are but man I can't imagine anyone talking trash on his playing there; anyone.

It kind of reminded me of 'yellow ledbetter' for a while. I forgot that lick and just spent a few minutes getting reaquanted.

I don't want to say "rip off", but it is very similar to Little Wing. Mike McCreedy is a huge Hendrix fan, so It's not surprising. He was even on a Hendrix tribute CD several years ago.
However, Hendrix's chordal style is extremely reminiscent of Curtis Mayfield, so it just goes around and around. That's why I laugh when JM is called an SRV ripoff, as if SRV didn't borrow extremely heavily from Hendrix and Albert King. And so on, and so on.

Regarding the rig: so his Two Rocks are basically loud and clean and his overdrive comes from a pedal? Or are the amps a bit dirty and the pedal pushes them into orbit?
Same principle with the Dumbles? I was always under the impression that D amps eliminated the need for any sort of OD pedal.....

It sounds to me like he has stock to maybe even weaker than stock output single coils. Then for puts a clean ts style pedal on to boost mids and gain but it still rings like bright singles on some stuff.
anyway that is what it sounds like to me.

None of those people have shared a stage with Buddy Guy, Eric Claption, B.B. King, and countless others.
The guy has some cred with the old timers, he can obviously play, and he's writing his own tunes. If you can't respect that, you've got some deeper issues to explore.

Mike McCready on the song:
That was written around the time of the first record [1991's Ten]. I think that was the second thing Ed and I wrote together. It came out of a jam in the studio and Ed didn't really have any lyrics. He came up with some ideas right there on the spot, and that's what we recorded. For some reason, it didn't make it on Ten. I was kind of bummed at the time. I really wanted it to be on our first record. But at the time, I was really young and just happy to be around this situation, so I did whatever.[5] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yellow_Ledbetter#cite_note-4)

Everyone complains he did pop for so long...
Um... last i checked, when Clapton was with Cream, Derek and the Dom's, and even the Yardbirds - it was pop music. Blues still, but mainstream. Furthermore, guys like Jimi were considered pop.
What's so wrong about bringing blue and the history of it to the masses? I know he showed me a lot people i would've never found out about, ie - Clapton, Buddy, the 3 Kings, Robert Johnson.
People should lighten up a bit and enjoy what is. It's just music, if ya hate him - turn him off.

looks like John's playing a PRS during "Stitched Up"
what doesn't he own at this point?
The PRS was the gutiar used to cut the Herbie Hancock record as far as I'm aware.
He sure has some sweet guitars and amps. From the snippets I have heard, this summer tour could be is biggest and boldest tone yet, a Dumble SSS with JM Sig into 2x2x12, with Fulltone TTE and the usual pedals plus I think a zendrive.
Seeing him on Tuesday here in the UK.

Also during the concert in December he used a L-5CES on that song. It's a $9,000 guitar...

Ever notice how Yellow Ledbetter and KWS's While We Cry are pretty much identical too??? Makes ya wonder....

I've noticed that too. Once he realizes thats how you step away from the "girly man" tone to the "woman" tone, he'll be on that train. His tone is pretty good now, but wait till he figures it out with a LP......yeeeooowwzzaa!

I think he is just smart enough to know that almost all successful male musicians are playing to the girls in the audience, something that a lot of other players could learn from.

Okay so I went to actually see John Mayer yesterday.
First of all: I'm not a groupie/fan, nor was I dragged to the show by my GF and I'm not a basher. Pics and video are not mine, so only a link. I will try to be as honest as I can about the gear, sounds, songs and the show itself.
The Gear:
Amps from left to right.
Marshall 20w with small speaker, Red Matchless, Hammond/keys, double 2x12cab with Dumble on top, double 2x12cab with Two Rock on top, 19" rack, two /13 half stacks, Drums, blue/purple Fuchs 1x12 and a Metropolis 2x12 combo. Clearly a bunch of gear whores... View here > (http://www.bekkersonline.nl/download/dscn1078.jpg)
JM Guitars:
Gold strat, cherry Gibson ES335, Black strat (worn), Black strat (with competition stripes), JM signature strat, PRS HB2, some acoustics.
The strats didn't sound very different from each other, he could probably do the show with just one strat. The 335 was a bit muddy. The acoustics sounded like acoustics..
Other Guitars:
Duesenberg, 70's strat, Gibson Melody maker, Epiphone Coronet (?), Ukelele, Gibson CS339, Thinline Tele, Gibson Les Paul Bass Goldtop.
JM Sounds:
The main tone is very fendery, reminiscent of Robert Cray, dry and punchy, sounds a lot like my '64 Super Reverb at high volume. Very nice articilation, all notes are there. Lead tones are a variation on the main sound, I have no idea when he was using what pedal, it all sounded equally good.
JM Songs:
Remember that I don't know more than 3 or 4 JM songs, when I write know, I mean: I've heard the song more than 5 times but less than 15 times. Someone pointed me to a mp3 link (http://www.sendspace.com/file/bwsg66)with last night's set which is where I got most of the song titles (and have been listening to while typing).
'Vultures' is one of those and he opened with it. Nice vibe and radio (read: girl/lady) friendly. Nice song to get things going.
Next up was 'Crossroads'. Honestly, let's just forget that song. I never really liked the Clapton version and JM's is inspired by that one. Have seen local bands play it much better.
'I don't trust myself with loving you', the vibe came back and everybody seemed to relax. I know this one too and I think it's a great song.
Next up was a George Harrison, worship song. Great song, but I'm afraid the message it brings is not going to work in Holland. John made a reference to it later, I kinda killed the vibe and he felt it.
'Good Love', again one I know, great lick, you could see they were having fun (and so were we). Ended with some trippy solo by John then into 'Belief' was just brought to my attention a week ago, haven't had time to get to know the song, but again that cool vibe. Great radio song. Reminds me of Bowie's Lets Dance.
Next up was 'Slow Dancing', Slow blues with a pop twist. I admit I heard this before, but I had no idea it was JM. He wanted to turn down the lights down but somehow that's pretty difficult on june 21th in Holland.
By then it was half past beer, so we when to the closest bar to get a few.
:drink
Meanwhile JM played some acoustic songs. He also played a song on the PRS HB. View here > (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PvksLBmBfrk)
After a few beers 'Gravity' set in. Someone once tried to push this song on me. Apparently it was the wrong time back then, because I liked it last night. I like the way he twists a slow blues into something more radio (!) friendly.
'Waiting on the world', again no idea it's JM. I have heard this a lot on radio while training. Nice song and again radio friendly. Nice one to close the set and take a short break.
Next up was JM's version of Duffy's 'Mercy'. He put a slow blues under it and was playing some great licks. Clearly jamming.
'Bigger than my body' started with some weird synth loop (?). Never heard it before, it took me some time to get into this, still not quite sure about it. 'Say', the final song and the guy next to him played a yuekele (baby guitar), nice song must listen to it later.
The Show:
Was it worth €50,- ($80,-)? Plain and simple, Yes.
I liked the vibe, the venue was great at a nice 10 min walk from my house, the sound was great which was a really great job considering the wind, JM played for 90+ minutes, it turned out I knew more songs than I thought and the beers and girls were great. I also like the way JM mixes his blues roots in the radio songs.
Next trip to the cd store JM is on the list!

I am always playing guitar here at the office. One of our secretaries doesn't think I can play because I don't play John Mayer songs.
Another attorney we work with brought his 15 year old up here to jam with me after work one day. I think, at first, he thought he was going to rip the 30 something guy a new asshole, but that didn't transpire. A little into it, he asks me if I could teach him something that would get a girl to take off her shirt for him.
I said I could teach him how to tap, because...hell, that would have gotten you laid when I was his age! He said he didn't think that would work. I said I wish I knew how to play "Waiting for the World to Change", because that would assure him at least a BJ. LOL.

I cant wait till Im best friends with him...
Im not freakin kidding!
Why? Cause Im just like that in real life! Oooops I meant the whole not taking it all too seriously stuff.
That was awesome.
Just back from the Bham UK gig, bearing in mind I have seen mayer before and listened to all his live bootlegs plus have all his records...lalala
HE WAS ON FIRE TODAY FROM START TO FINISH. His tone was more liquid and more greasy then ever, and his control of the feedback is just nuts, sustain coming outta the wazoo. SERIOUSLY. I WAS BLOWN AWAY. One slow blues ('ain't nobody's business') was seriously burning.
He is a straight up nasty guitar player with incredible groove. Friend I went with is a muso, PHD in composition and horn player. He is also an FOH engineer, has seen some of the best players ever and he was stunned. Literally. Band uber tight and even when they ****ed up old tunes it was seamless and on point. Mayer was funny and entertaining and most of the tunes would have been good closers for many but he just kept on coming...and you knew he had more to give.
Those who don't like his style fine, but I have rarely seen a better guitar player.
New rig is his best tone yet, varied but chunky, lush and wide! Zendrive - if that's what I heard, I want one!

Been a Mayer fan for a long time. Some of my friends remember when he took money at the door for a small acoustic place here in GA called Eddies Attic. I've been listening to his last CD for a while, and recently saw the same CD with 7 live tracks on it. If you haven't bought it yet...get that one for $20. The solo on Gravity alone is worth the price of admission and there is a blues song with some awesome licks on it.

Its got to be pretty cool to have David Ryan Harris as your guitar player. DRH has some really cool solo albums as well as The Brand New Immortals and to go WAY back, Follow For Now who if I remember correctly opened for Pearl Jam on a tour in like 91. I never really liked Pearl Jam, but the other day I was thinking to myself while mixing monitors at a 7 Dust show that I miss the music scene in the 90s. There was actually lots of good guitar playing on the radio. Granted the radio sucks these days. So, in closing I dont think theres a guy on here who wouldnt jump at the chance to be JM for at least a day or two. Jennifer Aniston? (does she count as a cougar now?)come on... Not to mention the chance to play with his band? Most guys would be happy with the chicks hes dumped(for at least a week or so). :crazyguy

I don't normally get involved in these John Mayer threads, they just don't really hold much interest for me, but I have to take issue with this comment. New and interesting guitar-playing will come out of wild, different and inspiring sounds wherever they come from. This has been the case throughout music history, cases-in-point:
Jazz horn leads to Charlie Christian and the birth of jazz guitar.
Blues harmonica informs the overdriven sound of blues-boom UK guitar (Clapton et al.)
Chuck Berry uses piano licks as much of the basis of what would become RnR guitar.
And so on.

There's some good bootlegs floating around of the summer tour. Check out the Dallas show, if you can find it. He does a version of "Mercy" that is just nasty and filled with great tone.

I had never really heard John Mayer or paid him much attention until I saw him on an episode of Chappelle's Show, that kid is *funny*. He plays "Every Rose Has Its Thorn" and at the end (of the show) Dave Chappelle, Questlove from the Roots, and John Mayer jam on sitcom themes, I almost broke a rib laughing.

I watched a few other JM youtube clips, I'm not gonna run out and buy any of his albums but the guy can definitely play.

Maybe the cabs. Allessandro cabs
John's cabs are George Alessandro 4x12's. The cabs are made of poplar that's stained black. The speakers in them are Celestions, Golds, Century and G12-65's. I found out through George himself. ;)
How is the speaker configuration? Does mix the speakers or is it Golds in one, 65's in another and so on?

You guys said there was a adrenalin pedal in his rack, and he used that on "I Don't Trust Myself" - I can't find a damn thing about this pedal on Google.
Can anyone point me in the direction of this thing? I've been trying to cop that tone for a while now, with no luck.

i've been following john for a long time and i must admit that i loved witness his gear evolution. it's watching a person's tone develop before your very eyes. cool for a gear whore like me.

Next trip to the cd store JM is on the list!
do you remember which guy was playing the duesenberg? love those guitars and his guitar players tones.
