1) Them: If you guys don't buy this soon, I am going to put it on eBay.

Well sh*t, I don't care if you do or you don't. I didn't buy the guitar yesterday because I don't want the guitar.

2) Them: This is the best sounding guitar I have ever played and it has been my number one for three years?

Me: Cool, how are the frets?

Them: Perfect! 100% I can't find a mark on them.

Me: Hey, I checked your feedback and you bought this guitar two months ago.

Them: Get a life! :messedup :rotflmao

3) Them: 62' Reissue Fender Stratocaster, Sunburst with a rosewood board. ***RARE*** ;)

4) Me: Hey, your ad states that your 2007 American Standard Strat has a Brazilian Rosewood Slab. That isn't a standard option. Does the guitar have a replacement neck?

Them: I have had over a hundred strats. I know what Brazilian Rosewood looks like. The guitar is all stock. :crazyguy

5) Them: Trust me, see my feedback!:rotflmao

That is so funny because I can't tell you how many times that I have thought the exact same thing.

What's really amusing to me is all the tire kickers who still want to know if the guitar is available weeks after it was listed for sale. Believe it or not, if the price was fair and the guitar looked good in the pics then it actually sold.

So why not delete the ad then?

That's what I was going to say. Even thought it is in the forum rules, I see an awful lot of "unresolved" ads linger around long after the item is sold.

this is used as a desperate plea to buy the item.

So why not delete the ad then?

I always put "sold" in my ad or/delete the ad. I'm talking about folks that sent a pm (usually numerous pms) expressing interest and then for whatever reason decided not to pull the trigger only to send another pm long after the guitar is gone.

when items are "priced to keep" ask for a quote in 2008 and not the price in 2020 :D

A: Everything's out on the lawn with prices marked, but none of it is for sale:roll

Yeah but on the other side you also get some really messed up queries from people when selling no matter how small the item. The most annoying has to be "why I are you selling it?"

I've got so tired of that question that I now just post a ridiculous reason to avoid getting that query like "am selling it cos I joined a cult and it costs a ton" or "to finance my crack cocaine habit". I don't mind queries about the state of gear or describe the sound or whatever. But isn't it obvious that your selling it for cash.

Actually...

I find nothing wrong with most of the sales 'techniques' the guys use in the emporiums here....including some of the one's mentioned in this thread....I've used most of them myself, and I've sold more than 20 guitars here.

Don't get me wrong, lying about the woods or pickups or frets, etc, etc, is big NO NO, but some sales talk is a natural thing, nothing unusual or unethical, IMO.

Remember, what seems like 'nonsense' sales talk to you is one thing, but if my for sale thread is getting 300 hits here, what you think is irrelevant as long as one of the hits buys my guitar, and as long as I haven't lied about what I'm selling.

I agree with you. There are a lot of sales techniques that others would might list as silly that probably work on me. As long as one is being honest, I see no lack of ethics.

Tell me, how would you identify the body of a MIJ/CIJ 62RI Strat, or the scratchplate?
How about the bridge, how do you know whether it's an 'export' model, or a Japan local market model?

Well, I guess I do. I was referring to the current US run. The ones one sees on eBay all the time if shopping for strats. I should have indicated that.

The point of that one wasn't that particular brand and model of guitar but that just about everything is described as ***RARE*** by some sellers. You know what I mean?

I have never asked someone why they are selling a piece of gear. Maybe I will start a new thread entitled, "Silly Sales Questions, Don't Ask Them!"

When I sell something in the Emporium, its only because I need money. I list it for a week and if it doesn't sell I put it on ebay. A guitar could linger in the emporium for months without selling, but I know that when I put it in a 7 day auction on ebay it will sell. So in my emporium thread, I sometimes include the fact that the guitar will be auctioned on ebay. I usually post that a day or two before I delete the thread. What the hell is wrong with that?

When I see something for sale and the seller says they'll put it on eBay in X amount of days, that makes me much less likely to buy it on the forum (unless the price is ridiculously low, but sellers usually won't use the "eBay threat" in that case anyway). I figure I might be able to get it for less on eBay if the seller actually does a real auction. Or, if they do a reserve auction and get no bids, I can contact them after the auction closes and try to negotiate the price down since the market has proven that they were asking too much. I guess it could go either way; the eBay threat could make people pull the trigger if they were on the fence about an item, but that's the way it works for me.

Nothing wrong with that at all. Some folks just aren't happy if they don't have something to bitch about.

Sometimes something is now **** RARE **** because nobody thought it was worth buying when it was new ;)

You realize that you are going to go to Hell for that, don't you?:Devil
:roll

But seriously, there is nothing wrong with it. It just seems silly when it is worded as a threat.

You know, the whole "don't f*ck with me man, I am dead serious about putting this sh*t on the Bay if you don't buy it right now," attitude.

When I read that tone, I'm like, "wtf, that doesn't make me suddenly want the item.":rotflmao

Some people like to wait until payday or for price drops. #1 says that won't happen. Totally reasonable.

Fair enough. This thread is more for fun than seriousness. :)

Personally I'm ok with the "it's going to eBay soon" thing, since the seller appears to be motivated. you know how many times folks here have said "man i wish you just posted it on TGP instead of eBay?" and then when sellers actually do follow through and put it up on eBay they get PMs saying "man I would have bought that for more from you, and now you have to pay fees and stuff" - where were they a week ago before it was put up on eBay then?

sometimes eBay is thus a good motivator, and the seller rarely is disappointed if they put it up there since in 7 days they're getting some kinda cash instead of having it linger in TGP for who knows how long - putting it up on TGP is a courtesy thing to interested TGP buyers, and pulling the trigger is of course better for the seller, cutting out the eBay middleman. so a selling saying "this'll go on eBay soon if there are no bites" is fair game, and fair warning as far as I'm concerned.

None of that bothers me, maybe I'm one of "them"...it's all part of the fun. :)

I've always found this curious stuff like this...
"I'm testing the waters..."
"...putting out feelers..."
"..extending my tentacles..."
What's with that? Sell it, man, sell it! :D
