I just performed the cathode split mod in my 5E3 and do not see much of a difference when I use the bypass switch. The two settings seem to be the same. Do I have it set up correctly? What is the itnded effect of the cathode split? I thought it was a bass reduction mod and it did tighten it up slightly. I also have the Humbucker mod ready to go but now I am not so sure that it is worth it. Thanks guys!

Can you tell us what the "cathode split" mod involves? Cathode of which tube? What exactly is different? I've never heard of it.

Basically. it reoves the cap and resistor from the cathod of V1 and also splits the connection of the lug2 and 8.It is supposed to reduce bass but the switch that is suposed to rejoin the cathodes doesn't seem to have any sonic difference.

Are you sure lug 2? The cathode of v1a is pin 3. If you're using pin 2, you've got the grid wired as the cathode.

There may be a gain increase when jumpering channels but each separate channel shouldn't be any different with the cathode split mod.
The advantage is that when splitting the cathodes you can use two different values of cathode bypass cap. That in itself is valuable when voicing each channel the way you want it.Say you like the normal channel the way it is but want less treble bite on the bright channel.Increase the cap value and you're there.
