View Full Version : 6V6 replacing EL34?

I remember reading on a tube site a while back(can't remember which one?:jo), about replacing an EL34 equipped amp with really good quality 6V6's. Is the plate voltage too high? I have a Carvin Legacy combo that I've owned for about 4 years, right now I have the GT substitutes so I can run EL84's in place of EL34's. I only have 2 in there now, with the other 2 sockets empty. I suppose it's running close to 20 watts(loud watts). It sounds great cranked up on the clean channel, nice breakup, but less headroom. The dirty channel is very good, but the cleans IMO are what really shine on these amps.
So, any thoughts about running 6V6's? I hear that JJ makes a great one.

JJ's will probably handle it since they're not really 6V6s (they handle higher voltages). Any other 6V6 might not be a good idea in an EL34 amp.

OK, say I put 4 in there, what kind of wattage would that yield?

10 watts each is a safe bet. You won't get much of a volume drop. You have to get to 1/10th the power to get 1/2 the volume.

I would assume so. I'm not sure if a spec sheet exists. You could try emailing JJ or Eurotubes.

How would the tone change, say compared to 2 EL34's at 50 watts... theoretically speaking? Thanks.

I tend not to describe tone. It's futile.

I'll just do it and hear what happens.
