My son just put together his first parts-o-caster. Mighty-Mite body (HSH routing), All-parts neck (Rosewood/large headstock/vintage frets), which he took to Fat-Cat in Algonquin, IL for a nut, finishing & fret polishing. They did great work.
There were a few challenges using the mixed parts.
The neck didn't mate perfectly with the neck pocket, and looked like it needed to go in the neck pocket about 1/16" more than it did. This turned out to be a non-issue (I think).
He Ebay-d a Fender trem (vintage 6-screw) with a solid block. Didn't realize at the time there was a difference in string spacing between actual Fender trems. Now we know, and the string spacing is narrower to the point that the E strings are not close to their respective pole pieces on the neck pickup.
The guitar went together pretty well. It's very chimey (much more than I ever expected from a rosewood board), has a nice straight neck, low action, excellent sustain, and really is a nice guitar.
I'm considering buying another bridge with the wider spacing, and remount the wider bridge in its proper position.
Here's my concern - if I do this, I'm going to need to fill in the holes I drilled and re-drill with different spacing. Ordinarily, I'd glue a toothpick into each hole and re-drill. Since this is a critical area, my concern is toothpicks won't be hard enough to withstand the pressure of the string pull over time.
Suggestions on alternate fillers?
Anyone else done this before?
Thanks in advance for any help!
