I just made a few quick video clips of my rig. Check 'em out! They're a little dark and very beefy! I've been going for a darker tone lately and it shows... lol

Sounds killer Thumpster! Although I already heard them on Rig Talk, just figured I'd give some love over here!!

Thanks! I think the Krank pedal sounds pretty darn good for a more modern tone. That pedal can actually be dialed in to sound good for classic rock, '80s hard rock, or modern stuff. It's very versatile and I dig it!

Yea, that Krank pedal gets great reviews, and not just for high-gain. I like the tone of it, but like the other clips tones ALOT.

I guarantee you there aren't many that will agree with me, but I can dial in the Krank pedal to be SOMEWHAT close to the Lovepedal PP800. Not exact, but close. The EQ knobs on the Krank pedal are really sensitive, making the pedal really tweakable.

I use the PP800 for 95% of all tunes we play live and the Plank Cranker and Krank for only a few songs. But the Krank does have a little more modern thing going on that I like to have for the Metallica and Puddle of Mud tunes we play.

My friend keeps trying to get me to buy a twin and use pedals for distortion, but the pedals always seem 'boxy' to me. I don't know if it was the audio from the video, but none of the pedals seemed to to have a 'full' sound, it sounded like the distortion was confined to a certain region of the speaker.

I don't mean to be critical of you or your tone, and I'm sure sounds much different in person, but that has always been my biggest gripe with distortion pedals. It seems like that will always be an issue and symptom of running the pedal before the pre-amp tubes. Now, if you ran a preamp into the distortion pedal, and then into a power amp, I think it might sound a bit different.

Yeah, I always feared that too, but I get none of that with this rig. It sounds very natural. I personally don't hear what you're describing in these clips either?

Maybe my standards are getting lower? I went from playing full and half-stacks from Marshall, Diezel, Bogner, VHT, etc... to this combo with pedals and to be honest with you, I'm very satisfied. I know that can change tomorrow (with me anyway), but right now, it sounds fantastic. There's nothing "fake" about it.

And for what it's worth, this rig sounds ten times better with the band at a gig than it does at home. Some people thought a combo wouldn't be able to keep up, since I was used to half stacks. But I'm happy to report that this amp has alot of thump and a thick meaty tone at gigs!

Moved to the new section.

Very cool tones there! Nicely done. I used to do the same with a twin. 3 or 4 pedals, and an amazingly versitile and LOUD rig.

Thanks guys. I've been thinking about trying pedals into a clean amp for a few years now, knowing that it's been done by alot of players. I finally took the plunge and am happy I did. It's a great coverband rig!

Chris, check the demos dave fox has on youtube demoing the Zim and Hot silicon they are very cool. He uses a Twin and gets some amazing Hendrix tones when he stacks the hot silicon into the Zim.

Holy smokes. Nice PP800 tones there! I used to do the TRRI with pedals (still have my TRRI actually) and it always gave me a raspy tone using transparent ODs... which makes sense now that I think about it... anyway, that's very cool that you're doing that setup, it sounds awesome, what are the amp settings at?

Whooooooops. I accidentally bumped up the wrong thread (my other Twin thread.) I meant to bump this old one.

Anyway, here's a new video I just made today!

Your clips are darn good. But like Nrvana mentions, theres a boxyness to it that drive boxes give to the tone.

Here is a great youtube clip of an attenuated marshall at probably the same volume level as your clips using the camcorder mic like you:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NZi3uoCH2o0

vs. your's http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KxYkcdR-G6E

Notice how the distortion character is more open and less midrangy even though the gain and tone of the distortion itself is similar.

Though, mic'd up close in a recording, or even live, I betcha there would be very little difference.

I hear what you're saying. I've owned/used ALOT of different amps in a live setting and trust me when I say this Twin with the right pedals makes one SUPER THICK MEATY rig! It's really hard to believe it's a combo.

Besides the clip you posted is a Marshall tube head with a closed back 4x12" cabinet. Not really a fair comparison!!! :)

You really don't have to "convince" me... My main rig is a Super Reverb and a Bad Monkey...lol...

I just agree with the other poster that pedals always have a boxiness that I've never heard go away.

Ha ha! Well the Twin seems to work better for me than most other open back combos, because the "scooped" voicing or something. It sounds bit, but doesn't have the typical open back combo midrange crap that I really don't like.

Most combos seem to have weird mids and weak lows, but the Twin doesn't do that! I think that's why alot of pedals sound good with it. It's a heavy mofo, though.

Thump, I'm as attention-deficit ridden when it comes to gear as any guitarist, but I've been following your Twin/pedals posts. . I still have my 1970 Twin , although I started doing some work on it and it's been in pieces for about 5 years now.. I got sidetracked .. haha.. Anyway , your posts are bringing back memories as I used mine in quite a few band situations with my pedals, and I always try to use gear that other guys really don't use , for certain situations... I played all kinds of 80's metal with mine as well as punk and funk and blues and modern alt-rock . The Twin has the "Thump " for sure. My friend used his original 65 with JBL's and his RAT pedal for at least 20 years of different band scenarios too. . He's not a gearhead like the rest of us, but I got to play his and loved it , and then bought mine as a result. . I used it on and off through maybe 1990-1995ish and was always the only guitarist in our hard rock/rock band , and it worked just great. There are so many different excellent amps and 1/2 the fun to me is matching the right pedals to the right amp , using it for awhile, and then going to try that challenge all over again with another amp and pedal scenario... I've used many many combinations and guarantee almost all sound very close to the same , after I get done with them! ROCK ON

Hey Eric! Yeah man, I've wanted to like a combo for a long time, but never really have until this amp. I'd like to try a Shiva combo too sometime because it's smaller and SHOULD be easier to transport and it's closed back with ports on the front. Those things make me believe it would sound very meaty and big, but I don't know that for sure.

But then again, I'm not sure it would sound that much better than my Twin and pedals if any better at all. I'm still amazed that I'm playing an "old man Fender combo"! ha ha... I never would've thought it would work for me in a million years, just because it seems like it shouldn't. But boy was I wrong!

Hey, thanks man! <crap, periods just stopped working on this laptop! Im gonna have a weird post, but I'll try anyway)

I don't remember the settings exactly, but probably had the treble around 6, the mids around 4, and the bass around 6

I try to keep my pedals set the same most of the time and dial the amp in for the room, but it doesnt always work out that way

Hey Sgt. I think we've discussed pedals with the twin before, I have a reissue twin and just don't have the heart to get rid of it because it's cleans are just too good. Your videos give me hope in finding the right dirt pedals.

Do you still play through the wampler pedals? Pinnacle or plexitortion? I'm looking for something that will achieve plexi range....

That video with the LP sounds sweet though. I think if there is boxy, its possibly just the camera recording you're using

because I swear that dirt pedals are always hard for me to deal with, but just saw minus the bear last night using a twin and I think a tubescreamer, great tone.
