Couple of new additions recently so I thought
I'd post some pics. Both turned out to be just
stellar instruments with great tone to go with
their good looks. I've been pretty lucky with
buying guitars over the internet and a lot of
that is because of the recommendations from
you guys here at thegearpage. So, a big thank
you from me for that.
This first one is a Suhr Standard I bought from Rocket Music out of Virginia. They were really great to deal with and gave me a very good price. The body on this one is Basswood with a 3/16 quilted maple top. This killer paint job is called "Chili Pepper Red Burst." It's really well done too, accentuating the flame in the maple without being too over the top. The board is Brazilian with no dots. I've always been a fan of this look and I think the unadorned fret-board is especially striking on this guitar. The neck is a maple Even C Slim and it's really smooth and very fast. The neck and the bridge PuPs are the new-ish Aldrich Humbuckers that everyone's been raving about. Now I see why. I haven't really had this guitar long enough to give a full tone report (I just got it today), but I played it for about an hour and, WOW are these pickups full. Just a super thick and warm tone that stays very articulate. The middle single coil is a JST FL and the tone knob pulls out to split both the 'Buckers giving me 9 different settings to choose from.

Next up is an Historic VOS R8 from this year. Now, the last thing I needed was another Les Paul but I was down at Rocker Guitars here in San Francisco and they had just gotten a bunch of stuff in. I've been hanging around and annoying those guys for years, but I do occasionally buy something so they put up with me for the most part. Anyway, I spotted this LP on the wall and something made me pick it up. I can't really say what it was. "Iced Tea" is my least favorite color for a Les Paul and upon inspecting the back, I could see that the paint job was just a tad uneven. In other words, a standard LP and nothing special by all appearances. I gave her a strum and immediately noticed a big, full acoustic sound and an incredible amount of resonance. I could feel the vibrations from the D chord moving up my left arm. So far so good. I plugged it in and was even more pleasantly surprised. This guitar was rich, warm, and beautifully mid-centric in it's tone. They quoted me $2600 out the door, so I bought it. Now, I could have just left well enough alone and kept it stock, but I had a feeling that with a few upgrades, this LP could be truly great. I took it to SFGuitarWorks and asked them to put in a RS Kit, a TonePros Locking Bridge, and some WolfeTone MarshallHeads. Man! You wouldn't believe this guitar now. It's amazing! The combination of the MarshallHeads and the upgraded pots makes this LP extremely versatile, capable of the greatest hard-rock tones as well as clean, jangly ones and everything in between. I would suggest you guys try these MarshallHeads if you can, I'm really impressed with them.
