I have a '97 Hot Rod Dlx that's in great shape and sounds decent as far as HRDx's go. I don't use the drive channels because I think they are unusable (to me they are). I just use the clean channel w/ pedals (OCD ver.4, Throbak Overdrive Boost, NKT Sunface and Beano Boost, Sweet Sound Pro Bender, Voodoo Lab Proctavia and Microvibe (have a KR Megavibe coming)). I plan on re-tubing it w/ TAD 6L6GC's and preamp tubes (TAD's, but not sure which ones).
For now though, I want to replace the factory "special design" Eminence speaker with an alnico one. Has anyone else done this with their HRDx? How did it sound? Can you suggest a great-sounding alnico 12" speaker that is cheaper than the Webers (I want one, but I'm not sure if I can afford it, so I'd like to find some cheaper alternatives)? Any info would be great. I can't find anything about this on the Unofficial Hot Rod Deluxe Owner's Guide site, so I thought I would try here.

"C'mon baby, light my fire! Geeee--aaaaaa--deeeeeeee!"
"Start it over, man. Start it over"
"Hold on, guys! I need to come up with an intro! Jim!! Hold on a minute!"
"Guys!! Guys!! I got it!!"
"One! two! three! four!"

Thanks. I'm really looking to go the alnico route. The Vintage 30 sounds good in it, but I want to go in a different direction. Alnico magnet speakers are the most-pleasing to my ears.

The speaker is not going to fix what is ailing that amp. It is the solid state distortion that you are not digging...to change to an alnico speaker just only barely improves the sound of the amp. The V30 actually sounds better with the solid state distortion.
As far as cheaper alternatives....the Jensen P12N is pretty cheap I think.

I'd say go for a weber Alnico Silver Bell.
Nice and "sweet" sounding. Its sort of british sounding, but not peaky and harsh.

There was a Weber Blue Dog on here for fairly cheap about a month ago.

Hey gang twanger,
Try the Eminence Cannabis Rex speaker in your Hot Rod Deluxe. I had one installed in my Omega Amps modded Hot Rod Deluxe that I used to own and it tames the amp's high end quite nicely.

Solid state distortion?
Are you referring the the solid state rectifier maybe? The HRD is all tube otherwise.

I have the White Lightning edition, which, aside from the white tolex, is mainly different because it come stock with a Celestion Century neo, the loudest speaker Celestion makes. The amp garners questions from guitar players who want to know what the hell is in it. So, you may want to consider a neo speaker of some type along with alnico. Just sayin'.

I don't have the cash right now to do a full mod job. Anyway, all I'm looking for is a clean channel that I'm happy with, and I'm fairly certain that swapping out the tubes that are in it (the stock "Fender" preamp tubes/Electro Harmonix 6L6GC's) for a full set of T.A.D.'s, and changing to an alnico speaker will get me the clean sound I'm looking for. I want to use my pedals to get any gain sounds I need. Otherwise, just straight-up Fender clean.
I've heard some of the modded Hot Rod Deluxes out there, and while it's a good lead tone, it's just not what I'm aiming for.
