Zenhouse is another really great one, it's acoustic/electric but the same cast of characters.

Two Doors has Michael Shrieve on drums and is split with Hellborg/Lane on half, Frisell/Horvitz on the other. Nicely done again.

As far as your list, Temporal Analogues of Paradise is way up there as is Abstract Logic.

I also highly recommend the new DVD of a Paris concert with the Selvaganesh brothers.

BTW, the book is kicking my arse(in a good way)! Thanks.

The Two Doors Shreive album is about my favorite - even at 1/2 a CD it's just amazing example of Lane's work.

I'll agree pretty much with fatang on Temporal Analogues of Paradise & Abstract Logic, both great cds.
Personae has some real good playing, but it's a little frantic sounding to me. The Indian stuff is amazing, but very different. Many people don't like it as much as the standard Lane/Helborg stuff.


One CD I really dig is the Powers of Ten Live with Shawn & Sean Rickman on drums. I have the video of this gig and it has some pretty nice playing on it.

But all in all, I dig the albums with Helborg the best.

Oops, I just realized there's a time is of the enemy live and studio. I have the live. Is the studio just as good?

Anyways, Icon and Good people is where he went heavy into Eastern stuff.
Another interesting one to get is Tri-Tone fascination. But it's more toward POT Live.
And then there's Paris the DVD for the Inian stuff.

Believe it or not, Powers of Ten did nothing for me and I'm glad that it wasn't my first introduction to Shawn's playing. In my opinion, there is not more beautiful modern music on the face of this earth than the contents of Temporal Analogues of Paradise. Two 30 minute pieces that cover all I need to hear from an electric guitar, bass and drums.

Maybe I am misreading an earlier post (or am just igorant in this area), but my understanding is that Time Is the Enemy is a live album. I think it's chopped up from various performances.

I had the same reaction to Powers of Ten, I don't like it at all. And it's not just the uber cheezy synth/key sounds. I do like some of the stuff I've heard him do with Jonas Hellborg, but after Powers of 10, I'm kinda' reticent to waste my money on other CDs for fear of winding up with another beer coaster.

IMOP Powers of Ten is pretty scary in that Shawn played all the instruments. With that said, POT live is awesome although try and get the version MINUS the sax. TAOP is number one in my book followed by TITE. Icon is pretty scary and so is Good Times.....

Miss him..........scary player. DVD's are just as good if not better. Start with the Atlanta Percussion......

IMOP Powers of Ten is pretty scary in that Shawn played all the instruments.

He played the drums on a keyboard synth in realtime. Personally I like POT a lot - especially Not Again and Get You Back.

For technical ability and facility I rank Shawn as among the finest there is or was. Much stronger technique than say Robben Ford.

For composition...well I have no Shawn Lane recordings, but I do have 7 Robben Ford cds, 2 instructional videos, and 2 transcription books.

Robben Ford: $215

Hmm, Funny, I have one Robben cd, one robben book and one robben dvd. About 10 Shawn Lane Cd's, around a dozen live dvd's and his Warner Bros. book that should be in everyone's library....
