Which, for the setup it is (Laney AOR 30 head into vertical 2x12) shouldn't be right. I had it up to 11 at my last gig (which is the first time I've played it live) and it still needed miking to be heard at all. The speakers are G12L-35's which apparantly are low efficiency, but still... 30W all valve cranked right into them should be heard right? I currently have no way of testing different cabs with that amp head, or different heads with that cab, but when I put new valves in I didn't re-do the bias, as I don't know how to do it on this amp and couldn't find out how on the net. Could a badly biased output stage be causing low volume, or is it likely to be the speakers?

The speakers are most likely the culprit's here.A low SPL speaker can suck all the volume from an amp.For example,a 15 watt amp with speakers with an SPL rating of 103 will sound just as loud as a 50 watt amp with 94SPL speakers.

Hrm yes I suppose so, will see if I can try another cab at some point. And I think a 15W into 103dB speakers will probably even be louder than a 50W into 94dB, I'm aware that +6dB = twice as loud, but 4x the power is needed, as a doubling of power adds 3dB. Which is why I need to convince my other guitarist not to buy a stonking great Mode Four stack, as he really won't get it anywhere near even 5 on the Master the type of gigs we play.
