A few studio pics

Thought i'd share a few pics from a recent project I worked on. It was for an Indy rock project with a female singer and a guitar player writing duo. They hired my three piece band to back them. It was recorded at CRC, (Chicago Recording Company) a few months ago and is still being worked on. I get to go down about once a month for overdubs but i'm pretty much done with my parts.

We got paid but i'd have done it for free. It was an awesome experience and we worked with a very well regarded engineer/producer.

The gear was just incredible. I can't even begin to list it!


Mic's on the guitar amps were... a 57, a Royer ribbon, a U47 and I believe a U87.

Of particular note, check out the 2 condensers on the floor in front of the kit! BTW, the drum tracks are sounding awesome!!

that's looking like a KSM-44, SM57, a U67, and.. maybe a Beyer M-ribbon?

The engineer is the most important piece of gear there. I recorded a handfull of times in studios, and yes 8 tracks will not sound as good as say 24 tracks at 16 bits or better, but the engineer makes it all happen. My favorite sudio I recorded at in NY was Minot in White Plains

You know, i'd trust whatever you think over what I said they are. We went down many times and the mic's I mentioned were were used at some point but may not be the ones in the picture.

On a seperate thought, I do a lot of home recording here at my place with very modest gear. One of the biggest things I learned from recording in Chicago is that no matter what gear, the process is the same. You have some songs, you rehearse them and then you play them until you have the best performances you can get. In either case, a great performance is where it all starts.
