I know this is mundane and not as sexy as deciding among boutique offerings, but my needs and finances are modest. Slowly, putting my buy list together...remember I am a 56 yr old beginner...
SCXD vs
Blues JR?
Pro JR?
Anything else under the 400 dollar mark?
Looking at one of the CV Squiers as the first guitar...comments welcome here as well...my current thinking is the DuoSonic, but I can be swayed...please give me some good guidance.

As a beginner, I'd choose the XD over the two others. The two others are good amps, but don't offer the somewhat accurate modeling capabilities of the XD. The XD does a coiuple of those modeling sounds very well. That couple with the amp still is using a couple of 6v6's and 12ax7's make it hard to beat for the money. It sounds good! Oh! and it has switching.

Don't do a duo-sonic unless you like a small neck. What is your dollar budget on the guitar???

Earlier this year I tried all three amps. I really liked all three and see no problem with any of them but I took the Super Champ XD home. I think it's a great amp and I really wish I had something like it when I started playing years ago.
Ironically, I'm going to order a Squire CV tele this weekend. I've play the Strat version and was surprised by it and I've read nothing but good things about the Tele.

Yep, I'd say go with the SCXD. It's a great sounding little amp.
I'm not familiar with the Squire CV Tele, but after reading the glowing reviews I plan to check one out.

I don't know enough to know what kind of neck I prefer. my thinking regarding the DuoSonic is that the short scale might make learning easier...my hands are very broad, but with relatively short fingers...at this time I don't wan't to put more than 400 bucks into a guitar. 56 yr old beginner, so I want to give it a shot as part of my mid-life crazies...but on the cheap for now...learning has been difficult for me.
