.........I called EMG but the tech guy is on vacation. I've never had any EMG actives (81 & 85 - with boost preamp). How high can I set them? Thanks

I set mine as close to the strings as possible, without being a nuisance. I definitely set EMGs much higher than non-active pickups.

The style of build on an EMG is low magnet strength and a high quality pre amp, hence the batteries.

Because of the low power magnet you can set the pickups much closer to the strings than you can on a conventional pickup. Close as you can get 'em w/o hitting the strings sounds about right to me ... the magnet isn't strong enough to pull on the strings and cause "strat-itis".

I have two guitars with EMG's, a strat with SA/SA/89 and an lp with 85/81. I have done a bunch of trial and error settings with the pickups and on the strat I set the pickups like you would any other guitar. On the lp I have the 81 set close to the strings and the 85 a bit lower. I basically just went with what sounded the best.

Imagine that ;)

I've had several EMG DG 20's in various strat's and I always set them as close as possible without interferring with my picking.

Set the bridge as close as possible without hitting the strings. Then adjust the neck pickup till you get equal output.
