Hey all! I'm new to this forum and really like the whole concept of the community. I'm hoping someone can give me some advice. I just installed a new set of pickups and seem to be having trouble with the neck pup. The volume is extremely low, even when adjusted as close to the strings as possible. I believe my wiring is correct, as I did it just like the bridge pickup in a 2 vol, 2 tone set-up, and the bridge pup works fine. I did have one issue: the leads come out of the pickup on the left side and the cavity hole is on the right side. The length of the pickup leads was too short to route properly, so the only way I could get it to reach the controls was to run the wiring diagonally directly under the pickup. I don't know if that makes any difference or not, but thought it was worth mentioning. Any ideas? BTW, the pickups are Duncan SH-4 JB and SH-2n. Thanks.

Maybe a pot is of the incorrect value? It also could be a ground issue. Is the neck pickup's pot grounded correctly?

Pots are 500k audio taper, cavity completely shielded with copper tape, ground wires to all pots and switch, then to bridge. I'll try resoldering the pup grounds, maybe I got a cold solder, though it looks good with a multimeter. Thanks. I appreciate the quick response.

I'm not sure what wiring schematic you're following (50's type wiring vs. modern wiring), but here's a link to a few diagrams to double-check your work. Also, if you're using 4 conductor pickups, make sure you've properly tied the two wires together that are normally used for coil splitting.

I followed the Seymour Duncan wiring diagram I got off their website. It's pretty good, and matches the wiring that was originally in my guitar, so nothing was changed, except the pickup change-out. The pups were/are wired for series/parallel, so the wires that would be twisted together are wired to a DPDT push pull pot, same wiring as on the bridge pup which works fine. I'll undo that and twist the wires together as you suggest and see if it makes any difference. I feel kinda silly for not thinking of the switch as being a potential problem. Doh! :messedup Thanks for the suggestion! You guys are awesome!

I found the problem. The wire going from the volume pot to the tone pot is under the same sheath as the ground wire between them. The two wires are shorted somewhere under the sheath. After my initial check, I loaned my multimeter to my son, who took it home. I went out and bought another this afternoon and checked everything I thought I had checked previously. I obviously missed it before. Thanks for the input. Had I not posted this, I probably wouldn't have gone out to buy the new multimeter, and would still be scratching my head. Thanks for being here, everyone!
