I am looking to record some clips (not direct). I was thinking I would pick up an M57... do I ned a mixer... preamp? I am a mac guy so garage band seems like a no brainer.
Interested in exploring cheap... but with an eye toward value and quality later.
Thanks in advance for any input.

You'll want an interface to plug your mic into.

The more you spend, the better features and sound quality you get.
Macs generally have Firewire ports on them and so I would look into firewire interfaces such as the PreSonus Inspire 1394.
Looking to spend more?
The PreSonus Firebox has a few more features.

Personally, after the experiences I've had w/ M Audio gear, I would recommend steering clear when choosing any sort of interface.
You don't have to spend a lot, but sometimes I suspect that you really do get what you pay for: though people may have qualms about the mic pres or the conversion quality*, the MOTU 828 has served me well for several years now. I think you'd probably have similar results w/ Presonus, Edirol, etc.
* compared to, say, RME Fireface or Metric Halo gear
