View Full Version : Blues Pro instead of my Blue Boy Deluxe?

I had the BBD for about 14 months and enjoyed it. But in the end I started to notice a sort of smooth metallic thing (hard to describe) going on in the midrange, and this could not be dialed out. Anybody else notice this?
But I really liked it for its transperancy and versatility and clear drive and fat lowend.
I also had a NJM2043D chip in it for a smoother tone.

Will the Blues Pro also have this "metallic midrange" ?

I really like my BB Preamp with my Grosh RC strat but on some gigs it doesn't cut through the mix. Does the Blues Pro have similarities to the BB Preamp?

I play my pedals into a clean Tweed Deluxe Clone (modded for more clean headroom) and the speaker is a Weber 12a150t (classic fender tone).

I have the Blues Pro and like it because it doesn't have any noticeable mid-hump. As someone else posted recently, it has a low "mid-thump." Nice low end and a great transparency at low gain settings. Keep in mind I only go up to 10:00 on the gain for a slight break-up. I find the tone control very useable and not harsh even dimed with single coils as it balances out with the low end quite nicely. I do not use the fuzz setting at all. I think it is a great little pedal for single coils and humbuckers. Recently, I've found myself digging the middle humbucking position with this pedal. Reminds me of the old CCR rhythm guitar sounds for some reason.

Haven't tried these two, but tried the Blue Boy next to the OD-3. They can be made to sound very, very similar, but the BB, to my ears, was a tad more open and, for lack of a better word, convincing. I keep the mids dialed back just a bit on the Blue Boy, so haven't noticed any metallic weirdness there (oh-- and mine isn't the Deluxe, but the older one with the internal trimmers. Also, the previous owner, our own erksin, swapped out the chip). It's become a favorite of mine. I had the BP briefly, and remember being slightly disappointed. That was a long time ago, though, and my ears have probably matured since then.

I still regret selling that one sometimes... :o

Yeah that one has an LM833N in it and I thought it made a significant difference in the overall level of compression and playing dynamics. Really opened the pedal up. The gain is lessened a tad, but I never came close to cranking it anyway. Totally worth the compromise in regards to the picking attack response, IMO.

Timmy has left the building. :hide

I know, not a popular decision, but I'm finding I have no use for a low-gainer (nothing beats my amps), and needed a less neutral boost that would give me some focus. For all my other boost (and even fuzz) needs, nothing has beat out my RX Overdriver. So, Blue Boy and Overdriver are covering my bases. Best combo I've tried.

The exact same thing just happened to me.
