how do you mic your cab with an e609. just hang it over the top and let it lie against the grill? put it on a mic stand? angled a certain way?
thanks

Live I've always looped the mic cord through the amp handle and hung it down. just off the middle of the cone with good results

Suprisingly, I've had better results using an SM57. I've tried looping, and putting it in a stand at an offset. It seems muddier and less detailed than even a standard SM57, at least to my ears, at the same angle/distance. Maybe that's not the common opinion, though. I'm bound to give it another try eventually.

Mic stand is nice so you can make adjustments. I'm digging the Sennheiser 421 for recording recently. Still use the 609 live though...

Thread it through the handle and let it hang over the front. That's how it's designed.

I have a 609 and SM57. I'm so fed up with the 57 man.
I know, I know. It's a classic. It's tried and tested. Countless recordings have been made with it. I just find it to sound small, midrangey, and fizzy.
I'm going to do some major experimenting with the 609s on Friday. I'm hoping for good things...

THANK YOU!!!
I have HATED the 57 fizz both live and in the studio for 20 years and always get stares when I say so.

And I thought I was gonna get stones thrown at me!!! hahaha.
Yeah, I mean, don't get me wrong. It's not a bad mic at all. Love it on snare. But it just frustrates me to no end.
I've never loved the e609 solo'd, but I'm gonna try just slapping the 609 in front of the grill, cranking it up, and hearing it in a mix on Friday. Big recording session in my basement studio. Beers, guitars, and platinum records.
Well, maybe more like, recycled aluminum records. haha.

I have HATED the 57 fizz both live and in the studio for 20 years and always get stares when I say so. i'm on board with that. i've gotten very usable sounds out of an sm57, but it's always been after considerable eq (which the sm57 always takes very well). i think its ability to take eq well is why people like it. rarely can i place it, push up the fader and have the sound i'm looking for.
i'm always MUCH happier with a sennheiser 421. maybe it's just that that's the sound i'm looking for. stick it in front, push up the fader and there it is. hard to go wrong with a 421 on an amp.
anyway, back to the 609, i dig it. i hang it over the amp through the strap, slightly off-center. very usable sounds out of it at times. and it's almost as if (at times) it sounds like an already eq'd sm57. but at times, it sounds really thin.
cheers,

This is the way I do it. I've been using SM57s for decades but I like these e609s.

Here's what I do with the 609's...
1. Place 609 in box.
2. Get SM57 out of box.
3. Hook up.
4. Play.
