I have an extra computer sitting idle I am about to load with Ubuntu 8.04.
Anyway, Does anyone know of any recording software that is compatible?
I just need something fairly simple.

Audacity (http://audacity.sourceforge.net)
Thanks, I will give that a try! I just hope I can get a good sound card driver.

You could try getting a copy of Ubuntu Studio. It already has all the apps you'll need - it's just Ubuntu with a lot of multimedia programs added. Alternatively you can just grab the stuff you need from Synaptic after you load the regular Ubuntu distro - I think Ardour is the main multitrack program for Linux. Audacity is really good for mastering but has a lot of latency issues when you multitrack but you can get around that by dragging the tracks around.

Ardour and Jack is what you want. I use both. As mentioned look at Ubuntu Studio. If you prefer Fedora Have a look at Planet CCRMA. It's what Ardour's developer uses. Soundcards are taken care of through ALSA. have a look on alsa.org for a compatibility list. You may also look into FADO ( formerly FreeBoB) for firewire compatible IO.
