View Full Version : Confessions of a Plugin User

It started when I innocently visited the Waves website a while back.

I am a guy who records real amps. Or should I say...(hangs head in shame)...I WAS a guy who records real amps.

Yeah, I used Amplitube on my laptop when I in need of something to write a guitar part with, but that's as far as it went. Or so I thought.

I got a whiff of the Johnny Hiland preset demos on the Waves website. "Damn," I thought, "if I get Waves GTR I will sound exactly like Johnny Hiland!" And so I bought GTR3.

And darned if I don't sound exactly like Johnny Hiland now. It's true. I sound exactly like Johnny Hiland if all his fingers were broken and if he was stone drunk. I mean, EXACTLY like Johnny Hiland!

But then I discovered even MORE presets. And man, I am that guy from U2, what's his name, The Bevel, only if he had a broken hand and was drunk, and, incredibly, I am Hendrix, if he had a broken hand, finger and back and was stoned on heroin, and I'm probably lots of other players of they had broken or missing limbs, if they were on various intoxicating substances to the point where they're ready to pass out, and if they had no talent for the guitar, but this software is...well, ok, I'm addicted.

I was Jimmy Page on a very bad night if he had a broken finger, ok several broken fingers and was under very heavy sedation, last night, and I couldn't believe how good my recording sounded. I mean, man.

I don't know who I'll be next, but I can tell you this: I will sound just like them only if they had various limbs and digits missing and if they were heavily inebriated to the point where they couldn't keep time or operate their fingers properly, and if they didn't really play very well anyway.

Great software.

So... would you describe it as intoxicating, but dangerous?

Mostly no.

;)

But it's addictive for sure.

Sounds like you accidentally turned on the Denyle filter if everything sounds like broken and missing limbs and an inebriated mind. It also applies a nice heavy sheen of self deprecation, so use sparingly. Also, be aware of the random moments of silence followed with a faint snickering.

I'm thinking there's a theme here...maybe quit drinking.:BEER

or at least easy on the caffeine.

I bought a plug-in that was guaranteed to remove all the bad notes from guitar tracks.

I inserted it on my solo track and nothing came out...

How does it sound for the all important space/silence between notes? I've never come across a modeler that can nail the magical silence tone.

I've solved it! I just put one of these (http://izotope.com/products/audio/vinyl/) on to the track and all that good old vintage vibe is back!!!

Now, I've not yet found a working "Broken-finger / heavy sedation" remover though... :o

Wait till you try the new melodyne with DNA plugin...you could be stone cold flat out on your face drunk and play with your toes...insert GTR3 after that. Whoo hoo, you'll be an instant U2 guy without all the broken limbs:D

I'm not sure it's the drinking so much as the fact that his hands are apparently in exceeding poor shape. Now if he were after Iommi or Keaggy, it would hardly count as an excuse...

I went plug in nuts about two years ago (Waves got me too!). Now I spend my time going back and re-doing most of those overprocessed and over FX'd tracks. Luckily I save them.

After many years with actual hardware, I know how to use the plugins with a pretty light touch.

It's the damned guitar parts that get me.

Well, whaddaya expect, I'm a keyboard player. From Detroit. Does it get worse than that? ;)

I agree that recording guitar is tough...but it's the vocals that I really have a problem with. First I have to sing which is a serious problem in itself...then I have to try to make me sound OK...which is sometimes impossible!

You have no idea.
Or more likely, you do, but have surpressed the memories.
