What to do with the old tapes? I'm old school in that I like recording to tape, even cassettes. I have no qualms about transferring to digital afterwards, though. No, no, no, don't try to convert me, lol. Its cool.

I'm in the process of transferring cassette tapes to computer (see thread about CD-Rs and CD-RWs if you have any input on that topic, thanks). After a while, I'm probably going to have a lot of redundant cassettes.

Since we are not talking any level of sonic superiority, and I'm in need of practice, would it be worthwhile to re-use the tapes? Does just recording over them erase the existing stuff completely? Should the tapes be erased before re-using? I've seen some bulk erasers, costing some pretty serious bucks, out there. How much guassing will these tapes need? They are mostly Type II, predominately Maxell XL II 90s.

thanks in advance. I think I finally found my round tuit, that thing people say they're going to get. "when I get a round to it" :D Help me keep it rolling.

*edit* part of why I'm asking is out of fiscal frugality. I'd rather re-use the tapes if they'll work (some are going on 20 years old !

I still record analog on 16 & 8 track reel to reel machines and either dump to digital or a standalone CD burner plus I have a digital workstation and a few standlone digital recorders and 4 track cassette as well.. You can still get new cassettes. There are a number of sites that carry high end cassettes vs reusing or degaussing.
