I'm finally ready to shift to digital. I've been using a tascam cassette recorder for years, recording demos, practice, multi-tracking. I'm not very techno savvy, the tascam is tough for this doofus to operate. Apart from setting up mics, I don't know all that much about recording, so I need recommendation from some experts on what stripped down recording device/software what have you would be good for me to look at. I would like to be able to use my mics (XLR & phantom power) I already own, and I'd like to be able to get recordings to mp3 format once they are completed. Advice/Recommendations?

I really like Mackie Tracktion. It's simple to use, but the complexity is there if you want it and the included plugins are very useful.

+1 on Tracktion. It's very user-friendly and easy to understand. And cheap too! I suppose there's something the big names can do that Tracktion can't, but I'm not sophisticated enough to have pushed its limits yet.
