View Full Version : Your favorite vintage custom color for a Stratocaster

'Bursts are cool, but what's your favorite custom color for a vintage Strat? Also, do you prefer a maple or rosewood fingerboard?
I'd do a poll, but there are too many colors and fingerboard combinations, so I thought I'd just leave it open.
Black with a maple 'board is cool, and I really like rosewood and Candy Apple Red together.

Another vote for Lake Placid blue, or Daphne blue if you wanna go back further. Generally I like maple, but rosewood works better, lookswise, on some colors, such as candy apple red.

Shell Pink with rosewood..........then Sea Foam Green w/maple. Lately I have been eyeing Fiesta Red with maple! They're all so good.......

Surf Green, Foam Green. I like rosewood fingerboards. Maple fingerboards are OK if they are not too light; in other words, a nice vintage kind of tint to it.

Lake Placid Blue is my pick, from any palette, vintage or otherwise, for a strat.
I have a Suhr Classic that is Lake Placid Blue with a rosewood 'board, white pearl 'guard, chrome knobs and black pickups. A stunning combination.

my two homebrews are modeled after a couple favorite combos; sonic blue with rosewood, and fiesta red with maple. I always like a vintage tint on maple with rossewood or maple fretboard.
I also dig the fiesta red w/ rosewood, daphne with rosewood, and black with a maple board. Lots of cool custom colors for strats. Ocean turq is nice too with a rosewood board.
About the only thing I really dislike is gold hardware on a strat.

I'm a sucker for black Strats . I've owned 5 of them and refinished 2 bursts in black . ( including a vintage '61 back in the '80's )
And to me , any non-metalic red Strat just looks wrong somehow.
As a matter of fact , I just bought my very first relic , which I absolutely didn't need , because I have a weakness for black Strats .

At the moment it's either Burgundy Mist or Daphne Blue, ideally a little bit worn & beat up with a RW board.
But then if I did have either of those I'd want an Oly White, also RW board as a back up !

IMHO...Strats are tonally the least created equal electric guitars on the planet so I've learned to let my ears and hands determine what my favorite color is ;). Unless you're a poser, what good is a guitar that looks good but sounds like pooh? That's not to say that a great sounding Strat can't look good or a good looking Strat can't sound great but, in my experience, tonally extra special Strats are few a far between...and it would be sad to pass up a great sounding one just based on its color.
Yup, when looking at photos of guitars or guitars themselves, I'm sure that certain colors would probably appeal to all of us...but the goal here is tone & feel, right :jo? When I'm wailing away at a gig, color, nitro whatever, fretboard whatever, flamed whatever, Brazilian whatever, one or multi-piece whatever, etc., etc. don't mean diddly squat if the guitar isn't delivering the tonal & tactile goods in your hands.

I'd have to say Lake Placid Blue for vintage with a mint green pickguard and aged pickup covers/knobs and switch tip. I'm also partial to Candy Tangerine with a brown shell pick guard and aged plastic. I think Candy Tangerine is a relatively new color as I've never seen or heard of any vintage Fenders in that color. Anyone else ever see any?

In order:
Surf Green, maple fret (not vintage yellow tint, but a very light maple)
Sonic Blue (same maple fretbd)
Seafoam Green, maple
Daphne Blue, Maple
Shell pink, rosewood (just like the one in this thread)
Mary Kay White, maple
Oly White, rosewood & green pickguard
As for newer colors, I love the Oregon Beige/Honey Blonde w/rust-colored pickguard like the Fender v-neck Honey Blonde, though I would prefer it w/ rosewood and a reverse CBS headstock.
I have a vintage Candy Apple Red w/ rosewood. Very nice as well.
