View Full Version : Austin Pedalfest '08!

Mullet Kingdom
08-11-2008, 08:00 AM
Date: Saturday, September 20th
Time: 12:00PM
Location: Music Lab

Brad Fee (Unkle Slam) has been chomping at the bit to come back to Austin sometime soon -- and what better excuse than to host another Pedalfest. (well, actually there are better reasons, but that's beside the point)

Last year Brad and the Tonefactor crew brought a plethora of cool pedals for us to scrutinize....er, marvel at. In fact they brought more stuff than we (realistically) had time to mess with.

For those with short memories, I've hosted and organized two similar events in '06 and '07 respectively. Right now we're looking at the last weekend in September (9/27), but it's not set in stone. If need be we'll move it up to 9/20. (note: scheduled for 9/20 -MK)

Who's game?

Not only do people know and trust the "Mullet" brand....they demand it. :D

~MK

Mos-def.

When you get a chance, make a list of the pedals you can bring.

My modest collection has been pared down to a handful of dirt pedals and a vintage Thomas Organ Crybaby.

Let's see what other folks are committing to first so I don't end up bringing a boat load. Is this more about checking out unique stuff or readily available pedals?

BTW, can you pm your phone # to me? I lost my cell phone. Will call ya thursday or friday morning to work out details for the DL show.

Now that I'm finally in Austin, I *should* be able to make it. If its in late Sept, I should also have an OTS by then, so I could bring that. Otherwise, my pedal situation has greatly diminished since the last 2 ATX pedalfests that I couldn't attend.

I wont have any pedals to bring except maybe a vintage ts-808 but I'd still like to come. I can however bring my newly acquired super reverb(EV's, Philips 7581A's, SS rectifier).

I'll see if E wants to go and can bring his plethora of pedz.

Yeah, it was at the Oltorf Music Lab both times. Though you may have this confused with the "Austin Ampfest" was in May (and again in November).

Some run of the mill stuff, some unusual stuff: an RX Overdriver, an 80s Crest Fuzz Face, the 1st version of MI Audio's Blue Boy (my new fav OD), a Tremster, a Carbon Copy, a Verbzilla, an odd old pedal called a Nu-Fuzz, and I have a Lovepedal Karl on the way. I also have a couple of old Fender amps that might make good platforms. I'd really like to audition some of Brad's stuff, though.

Like I mentioned before -- we could have spent the whole day with just the stuff that Brad brought. So no worries where that's concerned -- but you should definitely bring that Les Paul in your avatar. :D

i might be able to come - enjoyed it last year.
Depends on how expensive the flight from SFO to Austin is.

Look - you (someone out there) must go over to the Continental and invite Redd Volkaert to drop by. Tell him there's a bunch of fans out there and would love to hear him talk about tone or pedals (have him bring his Tele and pedals) and maybe play a little for us too! See if that would work.

He's usually playing a gig on Saturday afternoons. What you're talking about sounds like a clinic. He might be up for doing something like that, but I doubt he'd do it for free.

My friend is bringing a Roger Mayer Voodoo Vibe+ (or whatever it's called).

He's also got Textosterone and a half dozen other cool things for us to mess with. I'll get a list going soon.

MK--Good to see you're back.

Depending on the date and "life" I'll try to make it by. I can bring the '64 Princeton with Tone Tubby that seemed to be a good "platform" the last time around. Guitar wise my Collings 290 should have a Stetsbar by then (!) and my Cardinal Rat Rod sports a '54 DeArmond (from a Harmony H44) and a Cardinal single coil...not your LP, Strat or Tele. :D

Pedal wise I can bring this small board:

And, I should be able to bring the even smaller "Texas Chainsaw pedalboard" with a Captain Coconuts II, Fuzz Factory, Empress Super Delay, Ibanez AD80 delay and Pitch black tuner, mounted with chain saw links.

I just checked the calendar and the Austin City Limits Festival is going to be happening at the same time pedalfest is -- which presents some pros & cons that need to be considered.

Pros:
there are always killer bands playing "after-show" gigs in the local clubs that you might not get to see otherwise. Lots of good possibilities to catch a band after pedalfest if anybody wants to.

Cons:
Austin is packed and driving around town takes a lot more patience than usual.
ACL typically draws about 100k people from out of town.
Hotels fill up.
Music Lab is busy because there's tons of national touring acts in town and they want to get in a last minute rehearsal or do some recording etc.
***

I mentioned all this to Brad and he's game for sticking with the original plan and doing it the weekend of ACL or rescheduling it one week earlier if need be -- but October is no good.

Let me know what y'all think.

clemduolian
08-16-2008, 09:28 AM
I say "Damn ACL, FULL SPEED ahead." Any "national touring act" would much rather hang out at the Pedal Fest than the ACL Fest...great equipment, great players and.............wait for it.....air conditioning (and no dust storms!).

So sayeth Clem

Well, it looks like the deciding factor will be whether or not we can get a good sized room on the 27th. If need be we can also move it over to the St. Elmo location -- though I much prefer the Music Lab on Oltorf.

If at all possible I'd rather not have to be in a room that's completely black for an entire afternoon. It's kinda gloomy and depressing. :messedup

No, September 27th -- but it might get moved up to the 20th due to ACL fest which may or may not present a unique set of complications. Like I said in my previous post, if we can get the studio we want we'll do it on 9/27.

We'll have at least one Super Reverb and possibly a JTM-45, so an AC30 would round that out nicely.

I've got a few builders sending some pedals for us to demo and I'll be adding those to the list too -- as soon as I get confirmation on what they're sending.

I'll be adding an amp and guitar list to page one as well.

Check it out and let me know if any changes need to be made -- or if I've missed anything.

I haven't done a tally yet, but between what's on our list and the stuff that the Tonefactor crew is bringing -- I'd say we're getting pretty close to reaching critical mass. Pretty sure I can do this. Pedal List:

Xotic BB
Xotic AC
Fulltone Fat Boost (1)
Zen Drive
Pearl Chorus
Mojo Hand Luna Vibe
Teese Wa

And the Fender Bassman channel on my Egnater Mod 50 is a pedal lovin' SOB. The Marshall Super Lead channel is good too.

Any body feel like bringing a cabinet to run it into.

Nice list!

The amp sounds like it's pretty rad, but it's way more than we need to demo pedals with. Don't want to punish folks with volume. Speaking from past experience, it tends to clear the room out quickly.

I'm not sure. Probably one or two strats, a Les Paul or two, a Collings I-90, a Wolfgang, a Reverend Charger 290 and maybe a handful of other things.

I'll look through the thread to see who's bringing what and add them all to the list on page one. It depends on who shows up.

Cool... well, I can bring my Carvin Bolt+ kit w/ handwound pickups but it's not the best--it has weird after-market switching and somehow I think b/c of these components it's a bit noisier than usual. I need to get around to the bottom of that issue one of these days.

There are a couple guitars I'd like to try so I figure I'd throw this out there as well in case anyone was planning of bringing them: if anyone has a Warmoth axe to bring, I'd like to try that neck (their standard). Also, a PRS Singlecut, Carvin CS or CT, 2008 Gibson LP Std, etc. I'm interested in trying necks/fit/playability more than sound, so I don't need to be plugged in to do so.

Thanks!

I can probably bring my Ceriatone OTS w/1x12" Fuchs cab loaded with either an EV12L or a WGS ET65 (Celestion G12-65 clone). The only thing stopping me right now is whether or not I have a head cab for the OTS by then.

If you're planning to bring a guitar please bring a stand for it. That way we can stack the cases in a corner and line the guitars up along the wall -- keeping clutter to a minimum.
