how come the zoom records things so quietly. when i play my acoustic, the levels are 3/4 of the way up. yet when putting the mp3 into the pc. the level's are still pretty quiet

anyone experience this? do you have to amplify the file post recording?

Where do you have the gain set? Mine seems fine when I record it up or medium (depending on what's coming at it).

Don't worry, just normalize the recording later on computer (Audacity etc.) and that's it :)

doesn't that color the recording?

I record my band live with H2 with the levels set low to avoide overload distortion. I then just open up the file in Audacity and boost the track level there. No noticable tonal change, other than the increased level before burning to CD/mp3. Works great and very easy to do.

Audacity is also great for splitting up a long file into multiple smaller files then exporting as a .WAVs in order to burn CDs.

You can boost the gain in your DAW, normalize it, compress it, EQ it, whatever makes it sound best to you. In my experience, all recorded tones need a substantial boost/adjustment to get them to where I want them to be. There's nothing wrong with doing that either....everyone does it.

The worst thing you can do is overload the signal during recording...that is something you can't fix.

No, not at all. Normalization pumps the volume of the whole recording,
so the loudest parts are not cliping. That's all :)
