After doing some research I learned that the G7 software for guitar allows you to enter notes in real time with a midi guitar, such as the roland ready strats.

This would be a HUGE deal for me, as long as it works well. Does anyone have any experience with this? My main concerns are:

1) How fast can you plan and still have it be accurate?
2) Does it capture string bending and vibrato?

When I record one of my lessons, creating the tabs adds about a third to the total time it takes me to shoot, edit, compress, upload and post the lesson. Obviously I'd like to cut this down significantly because the value added is not worth a third of the time. If I could have a setup where I literally just play what's in the lesson and then just do minimal cleanup, it would save me hours.

It has been a year or two since I tried to work with this. I had the Roland GK3 pickup, the GI20 interface, and was using Finale Allegro on my Mac. For my purposes, it didn't work well. It did work well for single note playing, but it really failed if there were multiple notes at the same time or if one note was sustained while another note was played. I'd also occasionally get tracking errors (they're pretty obvious notationally, as they are extreme note values), which led to a lot of cleaning up. For fingerstyle playing it really wasn't very good.

I wish I still had the capability, as now that I know more about how Finale works I think that I could get better results from it. Basically, I'd map each string to its own stave and then combine the six staves to one when I was done recording. It would still need some cleaning up, but I think it might work.

If you are focusing on single note playing, then I think you'll be pretty happy. It will take some tweaking to get everything set well for your playing style.

I found it to works very well on Cubase using the old Roland midi pickup with the old Roland GI-10 Guitar Midi Interface. Iv,e used it for lessons and my own Tab. My music guitar wise is hard to play and the midi side of things always works well for me. Most of my midi guitar playing is finger style I do bass and drums with it as well. The best thing to do is edit in the Key edit (on Cubase) its very easy to see any double or open strings. I can do this without hearing it. Then check the Tab, you do have to play well (meaning some guitar techniques will not work well, playing midi guitar is a different frame of mind !!!) Most of the tracks on my signature below are midi guitar.

I found it works but you have to (a) Set the Midi pickup to the right height. (b) Set the sensitivity for each string for your own playing dynamic. (c) Set the general sensitivity for the part you are playing. (d) Ideally switch to the chromatic mode as bend range takes longer to compute. (e) Play around with the velocity in your audio program.

For just putting TAB into the computer try using a sound such as a marimba that always tracks well and doesn,t have to much sustain. When everything is set up properly you can even strum chords. But remember sloppy playing will never work with midi guitar.................Good luck. :AOK
