View Full Version : Best way to get drum tracks without a drummer

Apart from recording a real drummer what's the best way to come up with drum tracks? I know very little about modern synthetic drums (or the latest recording tools in general for that matter...).
Does ProTools enable you to create decent sounding drum tracks from within ProTools?

My intention is not to derail the thread, but it appears that there are a few EZDrummer users here. What sequencers or software are you running it in?

I've used EZD in Digital Performer, Logic and Garageband.
And I just upgraded to Toontracks, Superior Drummer 2.0.

I use both EZDrummer and Superior 2.0 with Reaper and PTLE.
Good stuff.

EZDrummer sounds like it is a popular option... I need to look into it. But I'll mention another one that I use and love, just to give you another option to think about.
Spectrasonics Stylus RMX.
It is not so easy to learn or set up, but once you get the hang of it, it is powerful and awesome. The reason I went with it is the sound of the demo tracks on their website. It has a certain sound that I really liked. And sure enough, the tracks that I am creating have that same type of sound. Lots of atmosphere around the drum sounds. And lots of unique sounds to work with.

for those of you with up-to-date recording/computer setups usually not a problem but for those of you...who like me...can't afford the latest and greatest and have older setups...beware of compatibility issues and processor load performance issues...

+1 on Stylus RMX with the "Backbeat" expansion pack for real drums. BFD and DFH are good too. If you're a Pro Tools user then Strike is also great.

I'm not positive but I think you need to be running at least 7.1.
Check out http://www.toontrack.com/ezdrummer.asp
The PC sys requirements are 1,5Gb free hard disc space, DVD drive
Windows XP or Vista, PIII / Athlon 1,8 GHz with 512 Mb RAM
Now, if you can't run it with 6.4 then download Reaper (http://www.reaper.fm/)
and use it instead.
It's free, and it will work with your Mbox.
I use it with my Digi002 and it's great.
Reaper runs every plugin I have with zero latency and it's very easy on your system so if you don't have the last high powered pc you're still ok.

Thanks JB,
yeah I found that you have to have 7.3 or higher,
I was viewing your thread on the Reaper, I am still very new to recording, will Reapor work like a normal studio, I can mic-vocals, guitar, etc......I can use my Mbox as a connection device and use Reaper as my main recording program?

yes, of course.
I use it with my DIGI 0002. Not much difference between that and an MBox.
Here's where you tell Reaper what audio input to use:

Look at the time frame of this thread: http://www.thegearpage.net/board/showthread.php?t=431972
to see how fast you can get up an running with Reaper.
TGP member "LV" was up and running in a couple of hours and he had no experience with
Reaper, EZDrummer or computer recording beforehand.
That's how easy it is.

Been using BFD and BFD 2 for awhile and love 'em. Before that though I was just using an Alesis SR-16. What a difference?!!! The sound quality of both BFD and BFD 2 are exemplary and the tweaking options are endless, although I'll have to admit to not being familiar with anything else. For an example of BFD 2, click below.
