View Full Version : is speaker cone-cry temperature dependent?

Have had a weber 12F150, 50W, un-doped for two years. Today, playing high nites, with distortion and bending causes weird over tone. I assume it's cone cry. Today it is very hot in Seattle and inside, where I am playing my amp, it is about 85 degrees. The speaker has never made this kind of sound in two years of use. Why would it start now? Same old amp too, and not even as loud as I sometimes play.
But, it is awfully hot in the room where the amp is. When things cool down will the cone-cry go away?
I have already tried driving the speaker with another amp (to be sure it isn't the amp) and the problem still occurs. So, I know it's the speaker and not the amplifier.

The cry babies I've had always cried no matter what, but too much midrange seem to make it worse.

Has your 'same old amp' been serviced lately?Maybe it needs a little TLC.
Also is the speaker simply going? After two years in a very humid environment,is the paper absorbing some moisture?

it is definitely the speaker that's at fault since driving the speaker with another amplifier has the same effect.

Try doping it and see if that helps.

I emailed back and forth with Ted Weber. He suggested putting a thin coating of contact cement around the periphery of the speaker. So far it has cured the problem!

What kind of cement specifically? Also, can you give me Ted Weber's email? Can't find it on his site-I must be overlooking it, but I want to ask him about getting a speaker since my V30 has cone cry. I might try that trick though, but mine has doping already.

"barge" cement
I was surpised how much difference a thin coat made. No more cone cry.
Teds email is near the bottom of the weber home page, on the left hand side.
Click on "contact", then, click on "tech support"

Okay, thanks-I had linked to a different "home" page so I found it and emailed him. Waiting to hear back. I've never heard of barge cement, that's not a name brand? Where did you find it?

Btw, I don't know if it has anything to do with weather, but mine didn't used to-I've had it for maybe 6 months, and in the last couple it has gotten worse and worse. Someone said it may be humidity but mine's in an air-conditioned basement and I keep the humidity below 50%-right now it's 44%, which is about ideal.

I found the Barge cement in my local hardware store. Barge is the brand name.
But,,by the way,,the cone cry is back., Darn, I thought I had it licked! Now what!
