Hi there, for the longest time my ValveKing 212 combo has been a very nice amp, but now it seems to be acting up. :puh

When I turn it on (stand-by off), it is silent which is to be expected, but when I turn the stand-by switch to "on" the amp hums, and I also hear this noise that sounds very much list static. The sound does not appear to get louder as I play which is good, but it is quite annoying. Also raising the volume of the amp, does not seem to increase the volume of the static.

The ValveKing has this class A to class A/B pot in the back, and moving that to the class A, seems to make the static worse, also tinkering with the damping seems to affect the static. Lastly, putting something in the effects loop seems to increase the static. I even tried just putting a patch cord, which in turn makes the static more noticeable.

Now, I know it isn't my pedalboard since I tried all of the above after unplugging the guitar and the huming + static are still there. I even tried another cab and the static goes to the new cab, so I know that something is amiss, but I don't know what that would be. The Peavey forums seem to be down at the moment so I a hoping that some of the board technical experts might be able to give me some insight into what the cause of this problem might be.

Thanks a bunch.

Well since its a tube amp I'd try putting my backup set of tubes in. No back up set? If not-get some. Not having spare tubes is kind of like not having spare light bulbs in your house. Eventually you will need them and even if its not the tubes at least you will know its time for a tech. Bob

Im no expert but I would deffinatley suggest replacing some tubes.
My best guess would be power tubes mostly because you said that it seems to get worse when plugging into your effects loop which I believe only runs through the power tubes. And you said it gets worse when when you change your settings on that knob on the back for class A/B.
I also believe that would effect only the power tubes.
Good luck. OH by the way,,, if your in need of tubes,,that amp was my first real tube amp and found that it was fixed bias, so you can simply call Euro tubes or Dougs tubes for example and tell them what amp you are buying tubes for. They will be able to set you up with the correct matched tubes to run safe in your amp.

That sounds like very good advice, I will try replacing the tubes with something else then. I am no tube expert (or expert at all :messedup) but I have heard many people in the net suggesting a change of tubes from Sovteks to JJ 6L6GCs.

How about some suggestions on tubes? (sorry, I know I am being cheeky here)

I would say the JJ 6l6gc's are a very good suggestion. Very robust tube with lots of low-end.

Call Mike at KCA. He should be able to hook you up with a set of power tubes on the "cool" side so you can plug em in and play. JJ,sed's...are good. Dont forget a few 12AX7's. As I mentioned before at worst you will have a much needed set of backups. Bob
