I have an Orange AD30 head that won't turn on. Checked the fuse in the back and it looked clean, but I'm not exactly sure what I'm looking for.

Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks,
Jake

Most likely the fuse. Often, they look fine when they're not.

If the pilot light isn't coming on it's either the power cord or fuse. If not those, it's something much more serious. Start with the easy stuff.

how do i tell if the fuse is broken. There are two fuses on the amp one is located under the power jack. the other is to the left of the power jack and is labled ht fuse, t500mA

The mains fuse (3A? I think) if blown the pilot light won't turn on. If the light comes on and the tubes light up then check the HT (B+ or high voltage, 1/2 amp, ok to sub w/ a 1 amp fast if necessary) fuse. If the pilot light lights up but the tubes don't come on or light up (heater filaments, sometimes hard to see) then there is one (or maybe two, depends on how new the amp is) internal fuses for the heaters. Oddly enough many of orange's internal heater fuses are 6.5A fuses (even when using two, each is 6.5A) when the main is a 3A.

Go to your local Radio Shack (or Fry's or local electronics supply store) and get a package of each value of fuse new and sub in new fuses even if the old ones look alright. Fuses can be bad even if they look (and sometimes even when they measure!) good.

If that doesn't get it started, then it's off to the amp doctor.

If the HT fuse is blown the amp will still switch on but there will be no sound. You can test the fuse with a multimeter. If you dont have one, try a new fuse. If the new fuse blows then take your power tubes out and try again with a new fuse. If the amp switches on then its your tubes. If it blows again it could be a shorted out filter cap or a blown power transformer. Its very unlikely that its the transformer though. Good luck.
