I'm looking to start recording my amp at home. I've already got an SM57, so now, I'm looking mainly for a firewire interface. The Firebox looks ideal, but I've heard that the mic preamps are really low on gain, making it difficult to record with a dynamic mic such as the SM57.

How many of you use an SM57 with a Firebox for what I'm trying to do? Do you encounter these problems?

um,i had to acquire a separate mic pre to use the dynamic mics with the firebox(JoeMeek 3Q).I could use it without, but i ended up pushing the class a pres in the firebox too hard. You're better off getting an inexpensive LDC for recording work(50-200$,depending).

Yeah, see that's the thing, I'd rather not spend for another mic....Ugh, why can't they just place higher gain preamps on the Firebox like they do the Firepod? :(

I do not think that is the problem. The bottom line is dynamic mics are designed with a higher rejection factor and lower output for it's designed application. If you try a decent LDC,you would immediately get it.The LDC is designed for a recording use with a lower output pre, with almost no rejection.

Because that would raise the price?

The Firepod is a cheap, entry level solution. That's all.
You want more/better then you have to take the next step up.

BTW - SM57 are fine for close mic'ing a cab, but that's about all. If you really want to hear an amp breathe you need a mic in the room as well.
I'd recommend a Shure KSM44. Amazing mic for the price and you can use it on everything.

OK, I should have stated that I'm wanting to keep the budget around $300 for an interface, LOL.
