View Full Version : Super Reverb hiss

I know this has been posted before but I looked through the old threads and didn't really see an answer. Anyway, my Super Reverb RI has a sort of static hiss when I turn it on. It gets louder as the volume does, and it seems like the volume is about the only thing that affects it.
I think it's V2, as I've tried about 5 or 6 different tubes in there and that didn't help. And no matter what tube is in V2, I can tap it and it sounds microphonic, some more than others. I could be wrong, but it seems like the chances of having 5 microphonic tubes in a row would be pretty slim.
Is there a simple solution to this or should I take it to a tech? Thanks for the help.

That kinda sounds like poor power filtering. How old is the reissue?

I'm pretty sure it's a 2001 model.

since electrolyte caps are intended to be replaced every 10 years, the 7 years on a reissue amp that may not be using very high quality caps isn't too hard to believe.
You can play the amp as it is if its not too annoying, or have a tech look at it for you.
If you're not afraid of a soldering iron, and know how to be safe inside of a high-voltage amp, you can replace the caps yourself for under $40.

Thanks, I think I'll just end up taking it to a tech.

Filter caps causing hiss? what the hell are you talking about?

hmm... I might be wrong here. Sometimes the tech stuff flips around in my head. But I do remember changing out the old caps in my Traynor and it quieted down all the hiss/noise.
Am I thinking of something else? I know resistors can create white noise hiss. But I suppose I should stop giving advice here:)

Electrolytic/power supply caps cause hum, not hiss.
Hiss could be caused by plate load resistors, coupling caps, the treble cap or almost anything in the signal path.
Sounds like it's "tech time".
