Hi all - hope someone here can help....

My Budda SD18 1x12 combo has started making a pretty severe crackling noise when I turn it out of standby. The best way I can describe it is like hearing a radio that's being tuned in-between stations.

The power valves (Groove Tubes EL84s) are new, and I've just tried fitting a new set of preamp valves (Groove Tubes 12AX7s), but that made no difference.

Does anybody have any ideas what could be going on here? It's definitely not guitar/cable related, as the noise can also be heard when no cable is going in the input of the amp.

Thanks in advance
Jordan.

did it make the noise before you put the new power tubes in it? 99% of all odd noises are tube related. I would swap in another set of power tubes before tearing the amp apart. Tubes are not the highest quality things anymore, esp from GT. If you have another amp that is quiet, I would pull the tubes from it and try them.
Never assume that the new tubes are good, I have thrown away a lot of new tubes that made stupid noises right out of the box.

Thanks for the reply....

The power tubes were changed about 8 weeks ago, and have been fine since I put them in. I've tried two sets of preamp valves, but nothing seems to make a difference. I don't have another set of power tubes to hand, unfortunately.

did it make the noises before you swapped in the power tubes? Id bet money that tubes are the cause of it.

I think I agree with you - the old power tubes had gotten microphonic, so I swapped them out for this new set of GTs. The crackling has only started occuring in the past 2 days. I'll order some more power valves so try out.
Thanks.
