What do I need to record clips & the most basic recording onto my windows/vista computer? I'd like to go to GC this weekend and spend maybe $250 on a microphone, audio interface & software. I'm more interested in recording the sound from my amp then having lots of modeling ability.

This is strictly for hobby, fun, & learning. But I'd like to avoid buying in below the line dividing junk from good enough. Thanks in advance for your advice! /jd

How's this:

Presonus Audiobox - USB audio interface, comes with Cubase LE 4:

Shure SM57 dynamic mic:

$250 (plus tax).

You'll also need a mic stand, xlr cable, monitors etc. if you don't already have them...but this will get you up and running!

I'll second that setup, looks pretty nice to start with. sm 57's are pretty decent work horse mic's for guitars.

Done! I would recommend the M Audio version with Pro Tools LE, but there are still issues with Vista compatibility.

Dont forget that when you step up to an external audio interface, you will need to connect your speakers to the interface, not your PC. In other words, don't forget to buy the extra cables.

Well I went to the local store, and they had a 2nd-hand Digitek Mbox2 for $150. The sales guy thought I could get Protools LE 7.4 for $75, but that seems actually the price of an upgrade from ealier Protools. As far as I can tell the actual program costs $250 and is almost always sold bundled with the audio interface. I guess I got skunked due to spending $$ before doing my homework. Hopefully I can return the Mbox2...

Thanks for your advice all, I think I'll get the Presonus Audiobox. Even if I can't return the Mbox, its still cheaper than buying Protools for $250.

Cheers, /jd
