If it wasn't for him and his tone/sound I probably wouldn't have picked up the guitar in the first place. This may sound weird, but whether he plays acoustic or electric, his tone sounds somehow the same to me. I prefer the electric stuff though, especially with Crazy Horse.

I thought I was the only one who dug that tone. The guitar tone on "Carnival" is the perfect "on the edge of distortion" tone. Do you know what amp she was using by chance? I read that she was playing a PRS.

I loved the tone on the latest 2 albums from Steely Dan. Sadowsky Guitars, Bogner and Guytron amps I believe. I also like the tone Henry Garza got on the Live @ Austin LLB's, using a Marshall Head thru a Bogner 2X12 Cab, Mexican Strat, Tube Screamer and Wah.

My three completely subjective and personal favorite "tone moments" are:
Any of the harmonized leads by Duane Allman and Dickie Betts on the Atlanta Pop Festival recording--Fillmore's great but for some reason the tone on this album sounds just a little sweeter;
The twangy yet ambient guitar fills on "She Came in Through the Bedroom Window" from Abby Road (I believe this was Harrison); and
This may sound strange, but the best country tone I've heard is the lead guitar on "Mama Tried" by Merle Haggard--I can't remember the guitarist's name. Simple yet perfect.
My three general favorites are Duane Allman, Hendrix (either Axis or Electric Ladyland depending on my mood), and um...Mick Ronson? No wait, early Young brothers from AC/DC, or EVH on VH1? It's so hard to pick three...
Non-rock runners-up would be Grant Green (especially Green Street), Don Rich of Buck Owens fame, and Albert King.
Not into much modern music, but I have found myself attracted to the quirkiness of Barthelemy Attisso from Orchestra Baobab (a Senegal band), and the guys from Dr. Dog, especially from Easy Beat (not so hot production quality, but cool guitar sounds).

Wayne Perkins will tell you that his solo on Concrete Jungle was the best solo he has EVER recorded. Wayne is the man! Gotta love his solo on his solo effort in the song Diva Down.
Also, I can't believe I forgot Scott Henderson. I love his tone!

For me, it'd probably have to go something like:
Mayer
Frusciante
Einziger
Many guitarists inspire me, their tone included, but something happens when I hear those 3 and their tone that makes me just wish I could hear elements of what they have going on shine through my own playing. More and more I'm getting turned on to Hendrix's tone. And as many have mentioned, SRV was a tonal beast.

Well it really depends on the genre:
Blues:
Willie Johnson (old Wolf stuff)
Hollywood Fats
Jimmy Vaughan (love all his tones, but prefer the T-birds first 2)
Albert Collins
BB King (Live at the Regal)
Freddy King (all of it, but I really love the early stuff with the Goldtop)
Elmore James
Ry Cooder
John Lee Hooker
Rock:
Duane at the Fillmore
Dickey at the Fillmore
Angus and Malcolm (during the Bon era)
Keef
Mick Taylor (classic Stones era stuff Exile and Sticky Fingers)
Brian Setzer
Doug Pettibone on Lucinda's Live at the Fillmore
Bo Ramsey
Marc Ford
Rich Robinson
David Grissom (Live at Liberty Lunch)
Scotty Moore
Neil Young (electric stuff
Billy Gibbons (1st 4 albums)
Ronnie Wood (Faces stuff)
Country:
Pete Anderson
Don Rich (Buck Owens)
Roy Nichols (Haggard)
Luther Perkins (Johnny Cash)
Redd Volkaert
Chet Atkins
Brad Paisley (sometimes, not always)
Junior Barnard (Bob Wills)
I just like SO MANY tones, they all seem perfect for what they're doing, or what they WERE doing. I generally prefer older tones, over newer ones.

My alltime favorite tone is from two specific songs from Eric Clapton in the 80s... (believe it or not, not everyone's favorite Clapton era...).
They were from the "Another Ticket" album.
"Blow Wind Blow" (can't find an online cut of this one) and "Floating Bridge" listen here.... ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xYORZTsYJcM ). The deepest, most lush and rich cleans I can imagine! He takes the Muddy Waters classic (Blow wind blow) and slows it down a touch, and really makes it sing with the clean chord runs and lead riffs. On Floating Bridge, it's a true slow-blues masterpiece. Those cleans are just on the edge of overdriving, but still as a clean tone, it's what I aspire to emulate.
I also really like tones from:
Robert Cray
Buddy Whittington
Coco Montoya
Albert Collins
Some Hendrix (the cleaner stuff)
Derek Trucks

- Most of Jimi's stuff - Machine Gun and the Live at Filmore East is the best of the bunch.
- Steve Hunter and Dick Wagner on Lou Reed's live Rock and Roll Animal. Intro/Sweet Jane and Heroin still give me goose bumps. If I was limited to one tone for the rest of my life, this would be it.
- Steve Hackett. He is the king of delay, fuzz and volume swells. The solo in Firth of Fifth is what got me into fuzz back in the 70s. Its the tone in my head that I'm still chasing after 30 years.

Can't believe in 14 pages i only saw his name mentioned three times but Trey Anastasio hands down. (and i'm mainly a jazz guitar tone guy). Its always surprising to me how little respect he gets in the serious guitar community. I think he's just written off as some hippie thing or grateful dead rip off or something. So far from the truth.
Best rhythm comping sound. Best clean tones, bluesy clean solo tones, and cutting butter overdrive sound. He has it all and will always be my favorite.
As a second choice i would put McLaughlin's tone circa his "after the rain" album. Such transcendent playing and perfectly dialed in tone.

If it wasn't for him and his tone/sound I probably wouldn't have picked up the guitar in the first place. This may sound weird, but whether he plays acoustic or electric, his tone sounds somehow the same to me. I prefer the electric stuff though, especially with Crazy Horse.

I'd probably kill myself before settling for just a single tone, so if I had to pick one I'd take Eric Johnson's ACL lead tone.
It's ridiculously versatile. Subtract some echo and add a ES-335 and you've got Cream. Grab an Ibanez and push the Tube Driver harder and you've got Satriani. Fiddle some knobs with a Les Paul and BAM: ZZ-Top. Fiddle some more and grab Joe Bonamassa, some more and snag some Zeppelin tones.
I'm damn near positive EJ's lead sound is considered so amazing because, while it's obviously unique in the way he uses it, it encompasses the sounds of dozens of our favorite guitarists.
It's remarkable that he gets away sounding like himself! lol
