I am trying to start a rock'ish type program at my son's Junior High School. So far he and at least 2 other friends are interested in doing something. I think there's a certain group of kids out there that would like to play music but NOT the typical "jazz band" thing...hope that makes sense.

So far, I am thinking songs like "Immigrant Song" "Shine on You Crazy Diamond" and maybe some standard tunes might be really cool for the kids to play. I'd even thought that maybe showing how to play the same song in different styles might be cool too...

Any other ideas of songs that might fit this kind of thing? I'd like to keep it fun but yet challenging too. Maybe even something like "Black Market"...

Thanks for any input...

Chris

Would probably help to find something from the kids' era too, or at least closer to their time, like stuff by Martin Medeski Wood (Scofield), Phish, Charlie Hunter's various projects, etc.

You need to be careful w/selecting vocal rock songs for a jazzy or fusion type setting. Alot of these songs may be boring to play w/o the vocals. There are many pieces like Herbie Hancock's "Maiden Voyage" that are somewhat technically easier and fun to play and good for young fusion students especially those learning to improvise. Leave the rock band stuff for the Battle of the Bands night...IMO
