Right now, my home CD player is programmed with Debussy's "Khamma" followed by the 2nd movement of Sibelius' 2nd Symphony followed by his entire 4th Symphony.
In my car CD player is the complete piano trios of Juaquin Turina along with his piano quartet.

Wish I had some obscure refernce to elevate me to some kind of GURU status but..
I scour threads for new material to cop in my band then search youtube for live versions of the songs by artists more creative than I.
Brad Paisley,
John Lee Hooker
Monster Magnet (they kinda suck live)
Clutch
I take cue's and inspiration from hardrock/metal and infuse them to my musical presentation/interpretation..

no need for guru status. you've answered that point later in your reply. it should be more about music discovery, which is what you're doing in search for music.

I'm currently listening to a scratch mix of "Blue Horizon", for an upcoming album of the same name with one of my bands. I just got done listening to a couple of tunes that will have initial scratch tracks laid down this weekend.
Listening means more work. Blue Horizon needs meaner, more aggressive guitar tones than what I have so far. I've been messing with direct recording and software amp sims, but I think it's back to mics in front of cranked-up amps now.

Right now I'm at work listening along as I copy a cassette to a computer. The cassette is a recording of people talking at a conference. It was recorded at high speed and I'm playing it back on a standard deck. I'll digitally slow it down so that it's listenable. Right now it's a collection of chipmunks talking about highway safety countermeasures.
Fascinating, huh? I'm sure y'all are going to want dubs...

The most creative beat-maestro in the bizz... IMO. He mixes soul and funk throw backs with avante-jazz and electronic experimentalist bents with straight up underground beats.
F*cked Up - The Chemistry of Common Life
Sophmore full-length for the decade old group from Toronto. Terrorizing local venues for ages and releasing upwards of 50 vinyl splits/singles/eps. Abrassive, intelligent and challenging. Neo-Hardcore.
Death - Human (remastered)
Classic Death with one of its strongest lineups... featuring two members from Cynic (Paul Masvidal and Sean Reinhardt). Progressive, technical and truly beautiful music. Celebrate Chuck's life, not his death, listen to his music and remember!

I found myself wondering what this album would sound like if it were made today. They'd 'fix' the pitch on the vocals, 'fix' the timing on the drums, and limit the life out of it. There's no way they'd hard-pan the vocals.

Cynic - Traced in Air
... Just got tickets to the 2009 Meshuggah North American tour, Cynic is "opening" for them and The Faceless is the opener for the tour; can't wait to see this concert, makes me wanna hug the touring agent who booked this line up.
The guitarist for Cynic, Paul Masvidal, has been a very influencial player for me and the chance to see Cynic live, I'm only 24 - the last time they toured I was 9, is something I never thought would happen.
Their new album is mind blowing... organic and alien at the same time; any fan of cerebral music owes themselves to at least check them out: www.cyniconline.com (http://www.cyniconline.com)
